The slur-spewing plane passenger who was duct-taped and zip-tied to his seat after an alleged mid-flight meltdown has been identified as an Arizona realtor.
Layne Arthur Lundeen, 67, of Tucson, forced American Airlines flight 618 from Dallas to Newark to land prematurely in Baltimore after his obscene outburst Thursday night — during which the bigot hurled the N-word at a flight attendant and spouted anti-gay insults, according to police.
Lundeen’s LinkedIn said he was a vice president at Long Realty in Tucson, however, his profile had been scrubbed from the site.
Traveler Juan Mejia, a former law enforcement officer who was onboard, told ABC News he and friend Richard Olenick jumped into action near when they heard Lundeen two rows behind them becoming “belligerent” the end of the flight.
“[The] gentleman sitting two rows behind us started becoming belligerent, making derogatory remarks to the staff of American Airlines and other passengers, racial slurs, vulgar language, very offensive to the women” sitting in the row behind the Lundeen, Mejia said.
Olenick said Mejia “got up right away and jumped in the seat right next to the passenger and began working on restraining him in order to keep the situation contained.”
Wild footage from the flight shows Lundeen looking duct-taped to the chair like a Scooby Doo villain with his hands, head and torso bound.
American Airlines told The Post in a statement that the flight was diverted to Baltimore “due to a disruptive customer.” When the plane touched down in Baltimore, “law enforcement met the aircraft and assisted with deplaning the customer before the flight continued to its destination.”

Either that or alcohol was involved.

On a related note, let me share with everyone here a handyman’s secret.
> Don’t you think it is excessive and cruel to tape him like that? <
I think it depends on the situation. It would be one thing if this guy were sitting on a park bench. But in an aircraft, that kind of yelling can cause a mini-riot.
So it easily could become safety issue.
So neutralize him in the least injurious way possible. And that’s what they did.
Yep
Spare the tape spoil the job.

I think it is standard equipment for the express purpose of restraining people. You have to have some method of doing so
I sure do and have been waiting for people to speak up against what they did to that man. There are ways to restrain people without duct taping almost their entire body for heaven's sake. They also deliberately took at least one photo of him and released it to the media to further shame him. At least one of the people who trussed him up like that was a large black man. I wonder if he was done up like that because he used unapproved words.
“Don’t you think it is excessive and cruel to tape him like that?”
Yes ... IF saying stuff was the only thing he did. But I believe he physically attacked his seat mate. Once it crossed that line, it was game over. He had the propensity to harm one person for sure — because he did. Anyone could’ve been next.
“They also deliberately took at least one photo of him and released it to the media…”
Who is ‘They?’
I would think that if it is standard equipment for the express purpose of restraining an unruly passenger, the airline is expecting that passengers will assist in that because there is no way that the flight attendants (at least the ones I have seen lately) would be capable of doing so on their own.
What we who make practical use of mathematics call "an existence proof."
Thank you.
It is actually pretty much standard procedure to restrain passengers who are a danger to others or themselves. There really is no room on an airplane to allow somebody to just physically lash out and refuse to obey the lawful order of the flight crew.
“There are ways to restrain people...”
And in an airplane in midflight just what do you think is available? Him using unapproved words was not the reason he was restrained. It was the danger he posed because of his physical actions that made it necessary to restrain him in his seat. Now if he had been calmly in his seat while shouting slurs even after being told not to by the flight attendant that would have earned him an arrest upon landing. Whether that would have meant the flight being diverted I don’t know. What I do know is that it is a federal crime to disobey an order from the flight attendants or crew.

Good grief! Are you that obtuse? At least one person took pictures and at least one person released it to the media. I understand restraining an unruly passenger. I do not agree with taping up almost his entire body, with the tape going across one eye and across his chin, and neither should anyone else agree with it.
“Why was this guy jumped if all he was doing was being bellicose? Did he threaten or strike anyone?”
Apparently he did — From an earlier article, “As the knucklehead went completely off the rails he lashed out physically, smacking his seatmate and smashing his computer.
A female passenger then began to help the man next to the blowhard but the creep pushed her back.”
Duct tape can be stuck to itself in square “pillows” and stuck into a pocket.
Invisible to magnetometers.
I am not opposed to restraining an unruly person, and I don't mind using duct tape if that is the only thing available, but I most certainly am opposed to trussing someone up almost across his entire body.
