President Donald Trump shared a striking social media post on Tuesday declaring the Strait of Hormuz to be American territory. The post featured a graphic image of the strait labeled "New United States Territory," a move that raises significant legal and diplomatic questions.
The declaration comes amid ongoing tensions with Iran and American efforts to control the strategic shipping lane through which approximately 20 percent of the world's oil flows. While Trump has previously claimed the United States maintains "absolute control" over the strait, this latest statement represents a notable escalation in both language and policy positioning.
That being said, this is not the first time Trump has made this threat. During a speech at a police academy in Long Island, New York, last Friday, the president indicated he would soon designate the shipping route as American territory. "After we finish defeating Iran, which is being defeated badly, pretty soon I will declare the Strait of Hormuz as territory of the United States," he stated at the time.
The situation on the ground tells a more complex story than the president's declarations suggest. According to recent data, only 14 vessels crossed the strait last Tuesday, compared to approximately 120 ships that typically passed through daily before the outbreak of hostilities. The unstable security environment and fear of Iranian attacks continue to deter commercial shipping companies from using the vital passage.

President Trump’s territorial claim is made to counter the claim of Oman and Iran to territorially claim the straight of Hormoz.
The US Navy in the form of two carrier groups and the US Airforce operating from 8 nearby bases can enforce the American claim

Here’s a point, if he had any intention of making the Strait U.S. territory, he’d have done it 6 months ago. Let’s try controlling it first before he posts more nonsense on Truth Social. Actually, I would prefer Trump to keep at least some of the campaign promises he made in 2024. Nonsense posts like this and 99% of the craziness he posts have nothing to do with 4D chess or “making points” or “Art of the Deal”. It just illustrates how detached this Administration is from what got them elected.
