NBA's Lakers sold to Josh Kushner and ex-Disney CEO Bob Iger for record $12BILLION just one year after setting all-time sales mark

One year after buying a controlling interest in the Los Angeles Lakers from the Buss family, team owner Mark Walter is now selling the historic NBA franchise to American businessmen Josh Kushner and ex-Disney CEP Bob Iger for a record-breaking $12 billion, ESPN is reporting.

Multiple sources have confirmed the deal, which would eclipse the $10 billion record sales price Walter paid for the franchise in 2025.

Kushner was part of a group of investors that recently tried to buy stakes in the World Cup from FIFA in a since-aborted proposal that has left the group's president, Gianni Infantino, fighting for his job. He is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law.

Iger recently finished his second stint as Disney CEO.

You can thank my wife for the high prices for any sports franchise. She watches every sport under the sun live on TV and live at the venue a couple times a year.

Me, I never watch any sports. Too many things to do with my life.

Iger is still on the Board of Directors of Disney, which of course owns ABC. A naked conflict of interest.

Those two guys, while very rich, don’t have $12 billion walking around money. Sounds like institutional investors looking for a place to park some cash. Interesting.

The lakers were gonna suck for the next couple of years anyway. Probably best to unload them now.

Josh, fresh off of this disastrous bid to ruin FIFA, turns his attention to a consolation prize

I doubt billionaires carry around a lot of cash. Most of their money is tied up in investments like equity in companies and real estate. The article didn’t say if Kushner and Iger will pay in cash or more likely in terms of shares of stock.
When Elon Musk bought twitter, now called X, he used a combination of cash, his previously purchased stock of twitter, loans, and money from fellow co-investors of X.

Its strange how sports viewership overall has clearly collapsed compared to 20 or 30 years ago. Seat sales, foot sales, etc. are not enough to pay the inflated salaries and most teams are actually on the hook for stadium expenses these days.

Have to wonder if they are really able to make massive profits they say they do by television income? Doesn’t seem statistically possible. Wonder if there is some insider gambling money moving around now that nationwide gambling is standard online? Or if it is a big money laundering grift? These franchises aren’t worth the money their asking. Something else is going on.

So Mark Walter flipped the Lakers for a $2 billion profit in one year? Nice.

Big Sports Apparel, Big Alcohol, Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Big Energy Drinks, Big Smartphones, etc is Big Advertiser’s lifeblood. And Big Advertisers is the lifeblood of the Sports Industrial Complex.

And teams are finding ways to charge higher prices for viewing — some wanting PPV exclusivity.

In valuing sports franchise, you have to look at the toltality of their operations.

Do they own their venue?
Do the own their local TV/Radio braodcaster?
Concessions?
Parking?

I would be hard press to think the Lakers are worth $12 miliion. They certainly don’t own the Staples Center (I need to keep up, it is now called the Crypto.com Arena and is owned by another entitiy.)

This valuation would put the New England Patriots in the $25 billion value based on the various parts they own outright.

Same with Red Sox and Yankees. They both own their venues and their TV and Radio.

Great news for the Clippers. How many Angelinos will refuse to have anything to do with the Lakers because of the Trump-Kushner connection?
