A Wake County lawmaker wants to prevent elementary school employees from dressing in ways that don't conform with their biological sex.

State Rep. Erin Paré, R-Wake, in a post on her campaign Facebook page Monday night, floated the idea of a state law that would require sex-based professional attire for public-school employees.

Mrs. Paré posted about the issue after hearing concerns from parents about the possibility of a transgender teacher in their southern Wake County elementary school, describing the teacher as “biological male, who dresses as a woman.”

In a post Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, Mrs. Paré added that the Wake County school district should have policies that “protect children from being exposed to more complex and mature gender-identity questions and concepts at too young of an age.” Mrs. Paré didn't identify the school in her posts, nor did she identify the teacher.

Mrs. Paré, one of only two Wake County Republicans in the legislature, is a top budget-writer in the state House. As a chairwoman on the House appropriations committee, she has a say on how state funds are spent on all manner of things, including education.

Her idea about attire could face an uphill battle against legal precedent. The proposal drew swift opposition from some on the other end of the political spectrum.

For reference, federal court decisions in recent years have protected employees from discrimination against their gender identity. One North Carolina charter school had its dress code — which required girls to wear skirts — struck down for violating Title IX, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination.

I think there were court cases many years ago about homosexual teachers. Teachers are allowed to be openly gay now.

I know decades ago, homosexual teachers would have been fired. Transgender would have been unthinkable.

But we live in a different world now.

GOVERNMENT schools. That is the essence of the problem: these schools are constitutionally created in their respective States, they are government agencies staffed by government employees, and subject to all the rules governing government.

A private school is much more free to 'discriminate'.

Getting government out of the education business will solve a lot of problems.

While I agree with your final point, discriminating against the mentally unfit is not unjust, nor should it be illegal. We need to stop pretending that transgenderism is a real thing. People are male or female biologically. Period! The premise behind transgenderism needs to be challenged and denied.

Agree, and also homosexuality. These states of mind are not "equally valid alternative lifestyles", they are mental, moral, and spiritual perversions. A healthy society would not tolerate them.

As I have put it previously: America was a better place when sodomy was illegal.
