U.S. and Saudi Arabia strike Iran-backed groups in Iraq after attacks on American forces

The U.S. and Saudi militaries launched airstrikes late Tuesday on Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, U.S. Central Command said, after Iran and its proxies allegedly targeted American forces over the last few days.

The strikes could pose a challenge to a five-day lull in U.S. attacks on Iran, as President Trump says he wants to give diplomacy a chance. It's unclear when — or whether — strikes on Iran could resume. The U.S. also said Tuesday it prevented an Iranian "surprise attack."

The U.S.-Saudi operation was aimed at "terrorist logistics and weapons sites across eastern Iraq," CENTCOM said in a statement posted to social media. The Saudi Ministry of Defense also confirmed that it "conducted precise and targeted strikes," citing its right to self-defense.

CENTCOM said the strikes were in response to more than 30 attempted drone attacks on U.S. forces and Saudi energy sites over the last three days, describing the attacks on U.S. assets as unsuccessful. Saudi Arabia said it has intercepted drones that were launched from Iraq and targeted petroleum facilities in Riyadh and the country's east.

I see that after Pres. Trump promised Saudi Arabia a nuclear program, they SUDDENLY joined in the fighting...up till now they have been sitting on the fence.

They were fighting Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen while we weren’t doing anything a while back.

The Saudis don’t like to get their robes dirty. That’s why they have mercenaries to do their dirty work.

The Saudi Air Force fought the Houthis years ago to a stalemate...all those F-15s, AWACS, etc. and they accomplished nothing.

“The Saudis don’t like to get their robes dirty. That’s why they have mercenaries to do their dirty work.”

They don’t have a lot of people, and a few casualties has an outsized political impact, because their whole tribe feels impacted.

Iran (including its surrogates) is the biggest security threat that Saudi Arabia faces by far. It may be approaching the time to give Pakistan the big contract for war with Iran. They are risk averse however, and would likely need significant reassurance of support from the USA, before making a big commitment.

So, when will iran’s neighbors meet the “THAT’S IT!” point and do the job? Ever? Or will radical Islam win out.

Doesn’t the Shi’ite majority hold government power in Iraq? I’ll bet they’re secretly pleased with these groups giving it to the Great Satan.

They’ll smile while officially tsk, tsking it.
