Speak or resign: Beshear ups demand for McConnell health status
Axios ^ | 07/28/2026 | Avery Lotz

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) demanded that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) verbally address constituents and demonstrate his ability to serve or resign his seat in a blunt letter sent to the senator and his staff.

The big picture: It's been more than 40 days since 84-year-old conservative stalwart McConnell has appeared outside of pictures released by his office after being hospitalized. His lengthy absence and past health scares are fueling speculation about his capacity to serve.

Driving the news: Beshear said in the letter that it was also being sent to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), whom Beshear urged to investigate McConnell's capacity to serve.

State of play: Under Kentucky law, Senate vacancies — which can occur due to resignation, expulsion or death — are filled by a special election.

Catch up quick: The letter, dated Monday, is the second that Beshear has sent to the senator's office requesting updates on his health.

Friction point: Rumors and conspiracy theories have snowballed in the wake of McConnell's disappearance, fueled by influential MAGA voices.

Beshear freaking out as the August 4 deadline approaches. Reach that date, and he can’t do a damn thing about it.

Something else Thune can't and won't do. He is in vacation mode. Again.

My friends the real action is in the Michigan senate primary. This guy Al Sayed really knows how to run circles around his opponents even better than Bill Clinton. In last nite’s 60 minute debate he was too smart by half but it doesn’t mean the voters will see through him. Let’s hope our candidate Rodgers faces Stevens in November even though she’ll be harder to beat. Al Sayed can’t go on in the limelight.

Beshear acted inappropriately and is wrong.

McConnell has up to 12 weeks of Family and Medical Leave Act time. FMLA protects his job and benefits. Not sure how the Senate handles it after the 12 weeks are up.

I am sure McConnell has submitted a doctor’s note and any other required paperwork as required by the Senate to the appropriate person in the Senate. My company requires a Family and Medical Leave Request form in addition to a doctor’s note. My company requires a Family and Medical Leave Request form in addition to a doctor’s note.

Beshear is “driving the news,” because he wants to appoint McConnell’s successor. Otherwise he wouldn’t give a damn.

It’s going to be Sayed. The rat SOS is running for Governor just like that thieving bitch Hobbs in AZ in 22. She will be “counting” the votes.

Beshear is driving the news because he needs an issue with which to launch his run for the demonrat Presidential nomination. A war with the GOP KY legislature over that Senate seat would be just what the doctor ordered.

I guess I just don’t understand what’s happening. KY is a solidly red state meaning a Republican would most likely get the seat in a special election. Having the seat vacant until January puts us at a disadvantage. What am I missing?
