Dactylic hexameter sounds like a march if you exaggerate the meter.
It's designed to sound serious and inexorable to match the story (plot), which is why Aristotle classifies epic as a less perfect form of tragedy, although the tragedies use a different meter.
Homer's Iliad was also composed in dactylic hexameter.

Yes, the early, pre-literate populations used poetry to keep their stories passed on from generation to generation — you can see this in the illiad and the odyssey as well as in the Mahabharata and the Ramayana and in pieces like the Song of Deborah
