US claims progress in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, saying 2 merchant ships have transited

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The U.S. military said Monday that two American-flagged merchant ships had successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz after it launched a new plan to restore traffic. Iran has effectively closed the critical waterway since the U.S. and Israel launched the war in late February.

U.S. President Donald Trump's new initiative to break Iran's chokehold has escalated the standoff. The U.S. military denied Iran's claims that it had struck an American Navy vessel. The United Arab Emirates meanwhile issued its first missile alert since a ceasefire reached in early April and accused Iran of targeting an oil tanker.

Iran's effective closure of the strait has caused a spike in worldwide fuel prices and rattled the global economy. As part of Trump's latest effort to reopen it, the U.S.-led Joint Maritime Information Center advised ships to cross the strait in Oman’s waters, saying it set up an “enhanced security area.”

It was unclear whether shipping companies, and their insurers, will feel comfortable taking the risk given that Iran has fired on ships in the waterway and vowed to keep doing so. Hundreds of ships have been bottled up in the Persian Gulf for weeks.

“We warn that any foreign military force — especially the aggressive U.S. military — that intends to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz will be targeted,” Maj. Gen. Pilot Ali Abdollahi told state broadcaster IRIB.

Just curious as to why they aren’t organizing convoys with a minesweeper in front, destroyers behind and beside, and A-10s on station overhead.

Further down in the story…

“ The U.S. military’s Central Command said the two American-flagged merchant ships were “safely headed on their journey” after transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It said Navy guided-missile destroyers in the Persian Gulf were helping to restore traffic.”

I see it now. 👍

Big Mo is losing $2 billion a day. Almost an arm and a leg. He doesn’t have many left.

The IR cannot be allowed to hold the world hostage to ensure their continued reign of terror. This should have been done decades ago.

“US claims progress”

AP/Yahoo -I am surprised they didn’t put the word claims in all caps.

Yeah, I also curious why they haven’t organized large, well protected convoys and escort them out. Clear out the backlog efficiently.

They know that all we have to do is take out the Island...Iran has absolutely no right to block those vessels.

We retires the last of the Avenger-class minesweepers last year. Minesweeping is done with divers and unmanned underwater vehicles. We’ve probably be doing some of that under the air cover provided by the A-10’s. But nobody is reporting on it.

Who would do the “organizing?”

This isn’t intended to be an ongoing operation. The goal is to just get any ships out of the Persian Gulf that are stranded there. These are almost all foreign owned and foreign-flagged vessels, and their owners would have to be confident that the convoy operation would be successful.

I've posted about that. The job was supposedly taken over by the Littoral Combat Ships.

I've read about that here, but the reports have been sketchy.

As of a couple of weeks ago there was only 1 LCS in theater with the counter-mine warfare package up & running. They were trying to marry up more packages with other LCS’s but that raises the question if any of those crews are qualified on that tech?

Why are we hung up on minesweeping? Just counter-measure with pathway detonation.

That leaves 3 more US flagged ships to go. Glad to see them prioritizing US flagged vessels. I’ve seen reports that Iran launched 2 cruise missiles and multiple drones at the US ships, then attempted to attack with small boats, which brought about the sinking of the 6 small boats involved. Having failed against the US Navy and US flagged ships, they launched an attack against UAE. I guess Iran intends to attack GCC countries every time the US escorts ships through the strait.

Most non-US shipping lines are telling their trapped ships to remain in the gulf.

Looks like retiring those four minesweepers in Bahrain was a false economy, bigtime.
