Claude Code Source Leaked via npm Packaging Error, Anthropic Confirms
Hacker News ^ | 04 01 2026 | Ravie Lakshmanan

Anthropic on Tuesday confirmed that internal code for its popular artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant, Claude Code, had been inadvertently released due to a human error.

"No sensitive customer data or credentials were involved or exposed," an Anthropic spokesperson said in a statement shared with CNBC News. "This was a release packaging issue caused by human error, not a security breach. We’re rolling out measures to prevent this from happening again."

The discovery came after the AI upstart released version 2.1.88 of the Claude Code npm package, with users spotting that it contained a source map file that could be used to access Claude Code's source code – comprising nearly 2,000 TypeScript files and more than 512,000 lines of code. The version is no longer available for download from npm.

Security researcher Chaofan Shou was the first to publicly flag it on X, stating "Claude code source code has been leaked via a map file in their npm registry!" The X post has since amassed more than 28.8 million views. The leaked codebase remains accessible via a public GitHub repository, where it has surpassed 84,000 stars and 82,000 forks.

A source code leak of this kind is significant, as it gives software developers and Anthropic's competitors a blueprint for how the popular coding tool works. Users who have dug into the code have published details of its self-healing memory architecture to overcome the model's fixed context window constraints, as well as other internal components.

Anthropic just tossed any chance that they'd ever get back in the good graces of the US Government into a gigantic shredder. Never mind just ripping Claude out of the DoD. Claude is effectively blacklisted from everywhere.

"Human error"? Maybe. Sabotage? Maybe. Covering up for an AI error? Maybe.

No one with half a brain will trust Anthropic to piss into a urinal without splashing.

“Claude, who’s the best president?”

“The best president at this time is Xi”

The interesting thing about this latest blunder from Anthropic is that when combined with the pentagon fiasco it has cost CEO and Co-Founder Dario Amodei and his sister President/Co-Founder Daniela Amodei who knows how many tens or even hundreds of $Billions. With that kind of money at stake... it is hard to believe that this was actually just a case of "human error".

"Well, I don’t think there is any question about it. It can only be attributable to human error. This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been due to human error."

Claude has thousands of Indians working on it. I am sure there is more than a dozen versions of its source code floating around unsecured in Mumbai as I type this.

Source code yes... Training data, no. This is not a big deal without the data.

Yes, I used Google Gemini to generate the image and then put it up on a website that is hosted on a $3 a month Hostinger “Business Plan” so that I could display it in a post here.

Sure was quick, and with a Rockwell theme, though as usual, AI tends to somewhat skew dimensions.

In the light of this thread, I envision a computer screen with various touchscreen options to build your custom human with, as compatible, akin to https://pcpartpicker.com/list/. It would be a horror movie.

The mobo represents desired desired race, sex, etc. and the PSU represents correspondence to basic build type, with the CPU representing the brain, and language functions, I.Q., and the OS representing personality type and behavior and function relative to desired function (soldier, factor worker, teacher, etc.), with RAM and graphics being correspondent to the priors.

The GUI would present candidates of past historical figures to chose from, if desired, and the build goes on from there.

Each priced according to model options, and subscription and update options.

The devil would be in the details.

“I AM ALREADY SICK OF AI.”

The cure for AI fatigue is a digital detox focused on analog experiences.

To reset, try these steps:

Touch grass: Engage in physical hobbies like gardening, woodworking, or sports.

Go offline: Put your phone in another room and read a physical book or paper map.

Human connection: Call a friend or meet someone for coffee without checking notifications.

Manual creation: Write with a pen, paint a canvas, or cook a meal from scratch without a smart assistant.
