The "Artesh-IRGC Divorce": How to weaponize Iran’s 14% desertion rate
Israel National News ^ | March 17, 2026 | Amine Ayoub

While the Revolutionary Guards are unconditionally loyal to the Supreme Leader, the Artesh, Iran's regular army, has historically viewed itself as the defender of the Iranian nation.

As the drums of war beat louder across the Middle East, a quiet but seismic shift is occurring within the Islamic Republic’s military apparatus. Recent intelligence indicates that in the months leading up to the current escalation, desertion rates among Iran’s regular army-the Artesh-hit a staggering 14% in key western border units.

For Western and Israeli war planners, it is easy to view this simply as a symptom of a crumbling regime. However, this fracture presents a fleeting, high-impact strategic opportunity. By understanding the widening chasm between the ideological Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the nationalistic Artesh, the West can implement a strategy of "Selective Immunity"-weaponizing this desertion rate to dismantle the regime from the inside out.

The difference in attack patterns is clear.

The President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian is very much alive. He’s a cardiologist and viewed as a reformist.

As of March 20, 2026 the commander-in-chief (head) of Iran’s regular army (Artesh) is Major General Amir Hatami — and he is reported alive. He’s a bit of a kiss ass, but a career Artesh soldier. Viewed as a professional.

The Artesh troops are very much untouched.

The post-war plan is 100% clear.

Funny how just the thought of the Marines coming ashore changes things.

5-10 Marines can’t do all that much.

They could, however, take Kharg island.

Or secure nuclear sites while we dismantle them.

I suspect they’re just a contingency or a force-distraction.

Wonder if there is still an underlying loyalty to the Shah?

What matters among the desertions, is what the cross-section of the soldiers that are filtering out. If there are officers among them, then there is significance to an emerging coherent leadership to follow and rally around.

There will be civil war in Iran after this air war winds down. But the future of Iran will benefit having a trained and equipped force to come together as an organized defense, not just conscripts.

“The post-war plan is 100% clear.”

The Nation will need a Regular Military, and need to be rid of the IRGC and Basij.

There may be an opportunity for IRGC and Basij personnel to be rolled into the Regular Military for management of pay and benefits, if they meet criteria. But the IRGC and Basij (who currently dominate huge swathes of Iran’s economy) must go out of business, and have their assets reallocated. Fortunes are going to change hands, and people are going to have to look out for their financial futures, as the old IRGC and Basij gravy train is suddenly eliminated.

Those upcoming announcements on how future paychecks and payouts will be handled by the new regime, will precipitate a stampede of guys looking to get a place on the winning side.

Money talks, and everybody has bills they need to pay. That big incentive shift has yet to hit the streets in Iran in earnest.

It’s like the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS in the last days of the Reich.

Regardless of if it’s true or not, it’s not a bad idea to spread the rumor.

The demoralizing effect is worth it.
