Pope Leo XIV made a plea on March 18 for countries to offer their citizens universal healthcare, calling it a “moral imperative” that people have access to the health services they need.
Previous popes have called for countries to offer universal healthcare, but calling an issue a “moral imperative” is an unusually strong term for a pope to use, indicating that something is required by Catholic teaching.
“Universal health coverage is... a moral imperative for societies that wish to call themselves just,” the Pope said in a meeting with participants in a healthcare conference organised by the World Health Organization and European bishops.

“You shall be healthy.”
Why not invent an 11th commandment?
On a related note, many Catholic parishes have cut health care benefits for employees.
Oh please do they even think about these things or it just feels good.
You know he means America. Is he expecting all the poor countries in this world to provide universal healthcare?
It is not an imperative to use the energy and future of the youth for the benefit of the old. I am absolutely against stealing the future of the young for my present benefit.
Great. I expect to see Catholic hospitals open in every community on earth within the hour.
Leo needs to issue a Fatwa against Shia Islam.
what a disappointment he is.
I would suggest then that hospitals which are run by Catholic institutions start providing care regardless of whether such care will be compensated by the patient or insurance or charity or the government. No one is stopping them from these works of mercy.
Stick to Universal Salvation pope
Can I see your health care plan Leo?
You paying for it, pope? Better open the vaults at the Bank of the Vatican.
Let's see the Catholic hospitals reopened in order to provide such health care.
Then Pope Leo needs to dig into his own pockets and pay for it.
This guy is not a pope.
He’s an Obama plant.
The popes have been fake since they dumped Benedict aside.
Universal health care can be a political goal, but it is inconsistent with natural law since not all people are born with the same health status. Roughly half of all people born, per Our Creator’s design, will be men and the other half will be women. There are major and significant differences in health program requirements for women compared to men. Some children are born with existing issues such as spina bifida, sight/hearing/other sensory problems, circulatory and digestive concerns and so on.
Therefore, universal health care can never be a right in the same vein that is the status of all humans are born with equal dignity and worth, and can enjoy the “Right to Life”.
The Pope might do well to resign the Papacy and return to the United States and run for office. Maybe President. If he wants to be a politician, he should live the real life of a politician.
How about universal food? Universal housing? Universal transportation? Universal legal defense? Universal electricity? etc.
Healthcare wasn’t just ‘there’ from the beginning of time. What we call ‘healthcare’ presently is the product of the efforts of a lot of people over a long period. They are no less important than farmers, or lawyers, or anyone else who provides something people need.
Christ said to the young man who asked how to follow him ‘keep the commandments, sell all your possessions, give to the poor, and follow me’.. The Vatican isn’t dissolving its assets, and dividing up the Church’s treasures among the needy. In some Catholic dioceses that I’ve seen the ‘higher ups’ in the church hierarchy push off a significant amount of work on those priests who have not climbed as high in the hierarchy.
I don’t expect any rabbi, priest, pastor, or religious leader of any stripe to be perfect. They are human, with the same weaknesses as all of us. That said, they should reciprocally not push political concepts that require other people to sacrifice - but not them. Sacrifice is a choice, and IMHO that’s the way God wanted it. It’s called free will and choice.
So why was he forced to resign?
“Pope Leo XIV made a plea on March 18 for countries to offer their citizens...”
Give him credit for limiting his demand to “citizens.”
