Trump Says He Will Not Use Force to Acquire Greenland
Time ^ | 21 Jan 2026 | Richard Hall

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he would not use force to acquire Greenland, the first time he has ruled out using military action to acquire the territory.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump lamented that the United States “probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be, frankly, unstoppable.”

“But I won't do that,” he added. “That's probably the biggest statement I made, because people thought I would use force. I don't have to use force. I don't want to use force. I won't use force.”

When the Euroweenies sold out their sovereignty to form the European Union, they created an unelected bureaucratic means to BULLY everything and everybody.

As they say the best way to confront a bully is to give them a dose of their own medicine back.

Trump still has the elites’ heads spinning.

They are not certain if they are winning or losing.

As Minnie Pearl once said of her cousing Nabob, he was so thick that if he was standing in the middle of the road with a horse harness, he couldn’t tell you for sure if he found a harness or lost a horse.

Historically, the USA has been trying to acquire Greenland for the past century. So Trump’s try is not unique in this case, nor is the refusal to sell or allow possession unique.

If we were the monster many European’s (or Leftists) contend we are, or even if we’re a monster because Trump is in charge, we would and could have just taken it, but we did not. That was never on the table. Yeah, yeah, Trump said he could, but he did not do anything to impose that.

The idea that Trump would take it by force was simply not true. No one fair minded thought he would do so. Only the most ardent TDS sufferers, or most sycophantic, did.

Trump was elected by the American people, and even during the election past, people knew his stance on Greenland. If Americans were so against Trump on this issue we would be talking about President Harris.

The problem with the Freepers claiming that Greenland would really be worth $800 billion is that they would be betting the taxpayers money, not their own money.

Now what are we going to do? I think we may never have the door open to buy it.

Denmark and the rest of the world sees this as a loss for Trump. He won’t take what they have and they don’t have to sell it.

Who knows where technology will take us in the future. The resources buried in the ice now, may become more accessible in 10 or 20 years. Someone mentioned what if Greenland becomes green again and the permafrost thaws?

"We just experienced one of the great climbdowns in American diplomatic history."

Bloomberg is reporting that the EU has indefinitely suspended approval for the trade deal with the US.

Also, Trump seems to be having a hard time distinguishing between Iceland and Greenland in his speech

And we did find that Truman offered $100 mil in 1946.

$100,000,000 in 1946 ==> $1,780,520,000 today.

Nathanbedford you win! Dumbest post of the thread. You now move forward to the dumbest post of the day competition. Early projections have you winning that one as well.

I trust Trump to do what’s best for America and to not get taken advantage of.

By avoiding discussion on the merits in favor of attacking the poster ad hominem, you both tacitly admitted that you lost the argument.

> If it was Obama’s idea, it would already be done, free and with celebration.

Obama doesn’t have ideas of his own but I know what you mean.

Still, IMO you’re wrong. Like Iran, any Obama “deal” would involve a financial fiasco and getting the right to put a small presence somewhere at great cost and which would absolutely not impede Russian or Chinese military movements.

Axiomatically his handlers did everything to degrade the US.

But you’re 100% right about the media and political fanfare and celebration.

I would like to see Europe or Denmark agree to USA military dominance or responsibility over Greenland and a lions share of resource exploitation
It simply makes sense in many ways and it’s a big pie for everyone including the inhabitants
And I’m a 95% Trump guy and have been forever

But I can’t disagree with your appraisal

It doesn’t look like a win

Nobody outside nuts ever believed Trump would send our forces to take Greenland forcibly from people who are historically allies in many ways

Lots of kabuki and in the end just asking for it

I suppose there are a lot of negotiations going on about what price is enough and how to structure something that everyone saves face

But the bluster doesn’t seem to have worked this time

I could be wrong

Do you have evidence Trump offered $700 billion?

See: https://freerepublic.com/focus/news/4363168/posts?page=173#173

Speaking of interest on our debt, how much would the daily interest be if we added another $700 billion?

Why buy Greenland when we can already have all the military we want there thanks to our 1951 treaty with Denmark? We used to have more bases there during WWII and the Cold War. Trump could have reactivated those bases and/or built new ones anytime he wanted during his five years in office. He still can. No need to buy the cow when you can get the milk for free.
