The U.S. is on pace for the largest one-year drop in murders the nation has ever recorded, according to an analysis by crime stats expert Jeff Asher.
The big picture: The decline in killings is part of a broader decrease in violent crime following the COVID-era spike. Mass killings in the U.S. also fell in 2025, reaching their lowest level since 2006.
The Real-Time Crime Index, which compiles data from 570 law enforcement agencies, shows a nearly a 20% decline in murders this year compared with the same period in 2024.
The database, which Asher used in his analysis, does not consider manslaughter, self-defense, negligence, or "accidental killings" for the statistics, according to its online glossary.
The database's statistics are currently available through October. The FBI will not release official 2025 violent crime data until sometime next year, though RTCI estimates have historically tracked closely with federal figures.
Other major crime categories measured by the index were also down nationwide and across locations of all population sizes, including motor vehicle thefts (23.2%), aggravated assaults (7.5%) and robbery (18.3%).
By the numbers: New York City and Memphis recorded nearly a 20% drop in murders compared with 2024, and Chicago saw them fall almost 28%.

I voted for this.
Ot seeing this. Everyday there is more front page murders.
“The database, which Asher used in his analysis, does not consider manslaughter, self-defense, negligence, or “accidental killings” for the statistics...”
Why not manslaughter?....they’re just as dead.
One suspects, however, that New York might just bounce back up again next year. (Hope not, we’ll see.)
Making America Safe Again.
Damned Trump and the National Guard!
Destroying the leftist nuance!
I don’t believe this. These decreasing rates are results of liberal cities and states lying about their real and true crime statistics.
“Damned Trump and the National Guard!
Destroying the leftist nuance!”
Exactly what I was thinking.
the left are desperately trying to make it seem like murders are skyrocketing across the nation under Pres Trump- even though numbers show a decline- the left know that all they have to do is scream a lie loud and often enough, and it becomes the new ‘truth’
It’s hard to lie about a body, though. Drops in other crimes, not so much.
One murder, is one too many but this is wonderful news. Prayers for the law enforcement officials who keep us safe and for more hearts of troubled minds to change.
It’s kinda hard to lie about dead bodies. Unless you think every coroner in every blue venue has been bought off to report most murders as accidents or suicides.
What I see is the same high profile horrific murders being repeated in the media ad nauseum.
Our local news isn’t reporting local crime, only infamous crimes that happen in other states. That too, is a form of propaganda.
Shipping murderers home.
“part of a broader decrease in violent crime following the COVID-era spike. “
Let that sink in. Axios thinks the spike in murder in 2020 was because of Covid, not because of DEFUNDING THE POLICE and 200 riots and $2 billion in property damage.
Yep, you can’t hate the media enough. Lying liars who lie.
The reason why is obvious. However, I expect some stooopid, bottom of the IQ barrel reasons to be floated by leftists and democrap party media people.
“Why not manslaughter?....they’re just as dead.”
The problem is the classification of murder versus manslaughter is subject to some interpretation. If prosecutors routinely downgrade charges (because they are wokesters like Gascon, Krasner, Bragg) then it can appear that homicides are down. At a national level I think this is minor, one or two percent fudge factor. But for individual cities it might be more significant. DC supposedly tried to fake their crime stats to make it seem they were doing a good job, nothing to see here, please just step over the dead bodies.
