All 1,600 Kentucky battery plant employees laid off as Ford pivots away from EV business

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- All 1,600 employees of the brand new electric vehicle battery plant in Kentucky will be laid off before Ford converts it to manufacture batteries for data centers and other utilities.

Ford will turn the Glendale factory into a battery-storage business for customers such as utilities, wind- and solar-power developers, and massive data centers that train artificial intelligence, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. And Ford announced Monday it plans to begin shipping the battery energy storage systems from its Kentucky and Michigan plants in Late 2027, a shift to "higher-return opportunities." In total, the company said it'll take a $19.5 billion hit to its profit as it transitions away from the EV business.

"Instead of plowing billions into the future knowing these large EVs will never make money, we are pivoting," Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley said in an interview with the WSJ.

...

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said through a spokesperson Monday that the state will remain the "EV battery capital of the U.S. ... despite the President's shortsighted attacks on the industry." Beshear said he's in direct contact with Ford leadership on a restructured future project.

"Right now, our primary focus is helping the affected BlueOval employees find new jobs," he said. "Team Kentucky is coordinating with company and community leaders to directly support these employees, in addition to planning job fairs and creating a website offering resources."

Beshear's office said the terms of the incentive agreement are being renegotiated.

"We are talking with Ford about it right now," Beshear said during an event in Louisville Monday evening.

Andy Beshear's scam being exposed in real time. He of course blames President Trump for what was an inevitable failure - and the signs of this were occurring before Trump took office for his current term and was an issue in the 2023 governor's race, which was pooh-poohed: https://www.kentuckytoday.com/news/beshear-cameron-spar-over-future-of-planned-battery-plant/article_c49d07aa-74e6-11ee-9f93-a30986ae3a44.html

They are going to make batteries for energy storage for wind- and solar-power plants?

LOL...that business could disappear the same way the EV business is disappearing. They may want to rethink their plans.

“Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said through a spokesperson Monday that the state will remain the “EV battery capital of the U.S”

gonna be a mighty small “capital”, though ...

“Beshear’s office said the terms of the incentive agreement are being renegotiated”

wonder how many gazillions of dollars of kentucky taxpayer money beshear pissed away on this boondoggle? ...

if he’s having to “renegotiate”, then they must not have included any non-performance clawback provisions, so it’s a bit late to want them now ...

That’s 1600 employees freed up to make internal combustion engines.

Just netsearch Moss Landing battery fires.

The Moss Landing battery facility has experienced multiple fires, most notably a major blaze in January 2025 that burned for days, leading to evacuations and reigniting in February 2025; this followed smaller incidents in 2021 and 2022, with the 2025 event being the most significant and destructive to the facility.

Wonder what the “carbon footprint” of that was alone compared to driving a gasoline powered car for life?

To paraphrase his late cousin, Jim Farley should be “living in a van down by the river” considering the way that he has run Ford.

I wonder if they will sue to oppose their firing, and have a judge declare they can't be fired and must be rehired.

No - that's just silly. That only happens when federal employees are involved and the Trump admin is doing the firing.

Finally, something taking the place of the Edsel as Ford’s biggest flop.

I disagree. There may be a sustained demand for grid battery storage because of libtards in government (at state level and federal level). EV battery storage demand is driven (pardon the pun) by consumer demand and there’s not much there there. Unfortunately grid battery storage demand is driven by stupid global warming doomsday cult regulations. So, again unfortunately, there may be a business model for grid battery storage.

I typed that as someone who likes both my EV and my decentralized solar with home battery storage. But I’m in a good use case scenario for them to be practical. They are not the one-size-fits-all solutions that the left makes them out to be. Especially after you throw in the left’s layers of bureaucracy and red tape.

The message to anyone that made the mistake of buying an EV: as soon as your battery fails there will be no replacement. Junk it.

I watched this plant being built over the last few years while driving by periodically to visit family. It was a MASSIVE undertaking. Lots of infrastructure inside, too. Had a conversation with a guy I was sitting next to a restaurant who was an electrical engineer working on it, and had decent long technical conversation.

This is the malinvestment that the climate extremists and government regulation have bought us.

Will taxpayers get that money back?
