He is shown in a 19-second clip walking on Waterman Street in Providence at around 4:06pm on Saturday, around the same time the shooting occurred.

Later news has him definitely confirmed as a Muslim. His family, his Mosque, etc. have publicly confirmed. His dad’s name is “Mohammed”, for example, IIRC.
There was lots of initial confusion between him and another similar looking Arab fruit seller guy who is a Christian, but that Christian dude was not the HERO.
We NEED good Muslims in the world. Right now, that BAD muslims paint the whole religion as evil. I have a very hard time, because the active public face of islam is that it wants to murder me and my family.
But that’s not always true. We need to establish an “Allah, Allah, In Come Free!” reserve in which GOOD muslims can behave well, in contrast to their murderous brethren. So I’m going to hold up Ahmed al Ahmed as a hero, hoping more and more muslims are willing to ally on that side of things.
Tough stuff. This is a multi-hundred year fight with many fronts. I’m staking out a bunch of positions over time to help win that fight, which will be concluded several generations after I’m dead.

But, then, George W. did call them the “religion of peace”.

Yup.
If we directly challenge their (in my opinion) evil religion, then we can only get war to the death of all muslims ... or all of us. They are obligated to fight to the death for their religion, which, while evil, is totally understandable.
It is much more useful to try to give them an opportunity to reform their religion by supposing “Good Muslims” as an out. It may take a few hundred years, and it may not work, but it is a useful attempt.

honestly, one decent muslim ripping the rifle out of another muslim’s hand— hey, i’m glad he did it, but one good guy out of a billion is still statistically zero, so it doesn’t change my mind about their murder-cult. I don’t want a single one of them here in the U.S. Not one mosque. Not one koran. Give him a medal, and then give him a ticket home.

I hear ya, and I feel that way most every day. But I’m holding out some hope for my great-great-great-great grandchildren...
unfortunately , since our betters have made such a mess of things, it will be up to the next few generations to clean things up.
I’m Protestant, but even I appreciate the fact that the ancient popes were smart enough to send armies over to quell things. We haven’t had a Crusade in generations, and unfortunately, we are due.
