New Arctic discovery could deal massive blow to Chinese dominance of rare earth minerals
Fox News ^ | 11/23/25 | Charles Creitz

A project heralded by Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy and accelerated by President Donald Trump stands to deal a huge blow to China’s dominance in the nanotechnology, energy and automotive sectors as the GraphiteOne site near Nome uncovered vast reserves — for which Beijing previously accounted for 90% of production.

As of 2024, the U.S. was at least 93% import-dependent on both rare earth elements (REEs) and graphite itself, according to the International Energy Agency, and the Graphite Creek deposit has already been dubbed the largest such tranche in the U.S.

But, this week’s announcement that REEs were discovered in addition to the graphite lode portends a step-up that the U.S. can take against the CCP through Trump’s "American energy dominance" agenda, according to a source familiar with the situation.

[snip]

Batteries, renewable energy technology, fiberoptics, lights, magnets and consumer electronics like phones and tablets rely on REEs, which often places the U.S. at a manufacturing disadvantage — accentuated by China’s 2024 export limits on magnet-related REEs, according to PRNewswire.

[snip]

REEs found include neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, along with ore rock containing garnet deposits. The site’s chief geologist noted that garnets can absorb certain REEs into their mineral structure.

This is a great discovery! Only under the Trump presidency has our government started taking seriously the problem of depending on China for the so many minerals and metals that go into advancing technology, especially for the military.

By the way, Graphite One is currently an OTC stock under the ticker GPHOF. It's closed on Friday at $1.03 so now might be a good idea to buy if you are into stock trading.

All good but how long will it actually take to develop.

Rare Earth minerals are not rare. But they require several hundred different intensive steps to refine. Sometimes you are talking about 200+ different acid baths that must be boiled away to produce a precipitate. Nobody can get permission to do this type of refining in the USA.

“Graphite One’s Domestic Supply Chain Strategy

With the United States currently 100% import-dependent for natural graphite, Graphite One is developing a complete U.S.-based, advanced graphite supply chain solution anchored by the Graphite Creek deposit, recognized by the US Geological Survey as the largest graphite deposit in the U.S. “and among the largest in the world.” The Graphite One Project supply chain strategy involves transporting material to the lower 48 via the Port of Nome to an advanced graphite material and battery anode material manufacturing plant located in Warren, Ohio. The plan also includes a recycling facility to reclaim graphite and the other battery materials, to be co-located at the Ohio site, the third link in Graphite One’s circular economy strategy.”

Biden’s “green” Czars were trying as hard as they could to prevent or stifle new mining operations in the U.S., for anything.

The article is disinformation. Rare earth minerals are simply NOT rare - what is rare is the ability to concentrate and purify them - something that the Chinese are way ahead at.

Yeah, between the “green” Czars and those working on behalf of China, the Democrats will work hard to prevent any rare earth metal production and processing here in the U.S.

The Hussein/Biden/Harris Regime had accelerated their grift, graft mining. They knew that it would eventually stop, and dug for as much $$$ as possible.

My suspicion is that large quantities of toxic waste are generated in the process.

Am I wrong?

Yes. They are not so much ‘rare’ but sparse. It has a low ratio of ore to soil/rock so greater amounts of soil/rock must be processed. The refining is also something the US must ramp up.

I’ve read several times that there are also large rare earth deposits in Nevada. There is no way the “environment” of the vast and barren Nevada desert would be harmed by any kind of mineral extraction process. If we could detonate hundreds of nuclear bombs out there, we can certainly process rare earth materials.

This does not surprise me. I used to work as a medic at Prudhoe Bay. One year in early June I had to medevac a patient with a severe head injury. The only available plane was an unpressurized Twin Otter so I instructed the pilot to fly below 10,000 feet whenever possible. We followed the Haul Road through the Brooks Range. Everett mountain I saw on the way south was a different color due to the presence of various minerals - tan, green, blue, purple, reddish. After that I figured there were a lot of surprises waiting to be discovered. The Seward Peninsula where Nome is located is likely the same. Boy, those Russians sure screwed up when they sold us Alaska.

No not “disinformation”. They are called “rare earths” and nowhere does any part of the story imply they are geologically ‘rare’.

But you are correct - the US under Bill Clinton shut down US rare earth mining an processing. Most US-mined rare earths are shipped to China for processing.
