A Fired Federal Worker Finds Refuge in Mexico
The Nation ^ | 11/18/25 | Rebekah Sager

Within 24 hours of arriving in San Miguel de Allende, Karen decided to permanently leave the United States and become one of the many recent US immigrants to Mexico.

Four months before visiting the city, the 55-year-old had been terminated as part of the Trump administration’s January 20 executive order suspending the US Refugee Admissions Program. Karen, who asked me not to use her full name because of her current immigration status, says through a haze of tears, “It’s hard to explain the compound grief involved in seeing a sector that did nothing but good just destroyed,” adding that much of her work involved the prevention of sexual exploitation.

The Nation is certainly all weepy about government workers getting canned.

And if we don't take in any more "refugees" because we've certainly taken in enough, then there's no need for the Refugee Admissions Program. See how that works.

But to her, she WANTS more refugees to come in, because that keeps her government job rolling.

Have fun in Mexico.

Winning! I hope she surrenders her U.S. Citizenship. She won’t be missed. Comprende Español, amiga? She will have excellent access to Mexican Coke now though.

Now she is employed by the cartel. Her position is to assist soeaking in illegal females for sexual exploitation where she is earning more money now, no doubt.

LOL. Thanks for posting these Nation articles. I absolutely love them for all the reasons that the Nation did not intend for me to love them. They are hilarious. I hope all these unproductive nuts go to Mexico. Let Mexico see how it feels to have waves of migrants. Only the migration from the US to Mexico is more cruel because its filled with lunatics like this whereas migration from Mexico to the US at least has some productive hardworking people.

We just don’t need a bloated federal government of Karens making big fat salaries with big fat benefits, FERS pensions and Thrift 401Ks along with health insurance all paid for by the taxpayers. The value they provide is not worth the cost to the taxpayer.

Government is the least efficient way to do anything. And people ought to quit relying on government to solve their problems. And government workers by and large do NOT do any “good.”

From the article:

“Karen was born in the US but grew up mostly in Japan, where her father, a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, fulfilled his alternate service teaching English.”

Sounds like this family only wants to be here when it’s convenient and advantageous......good riddance I say

“I hope all these unproductive nuts go to Mexico.”

You have to have at least the minimum income specified by la ley de Mexico to get a residency visa.

There is no country on Earth as far as I know that would grant me a residency visa.

She’s not living in Mexico per se, she’s living in a haven full of lefty expats. These expats have pushed the locals out of the historical center of a very beautiful city. They only speak Spanish with the “help.”

Karen, who asked me not to use her full name because of her current immigration status

So she’s in Mexico without a visa? Don’t get caught.

"...a sector that did nothing but good..."

Sorry, Karen. It would be more accurate to say "a sector that did nothing at all".
