Democratic voters, at the moment, seem to be nursing nostalgia for Nancy Pelosi... Her dynamism would be hard for anyone to match.

Schumer needed to end the shutdown. So, he found eight Democrats to vote for it who were either not running again or probably wouldn’t be hurt by the vote. He probably told them, “Look we must do this. The shutdown has backfired. Plus, I’m going to say some bad things about you. But you can have (some trade item) and I’ll owe you a favor in the future.”

For all my disgust, I don’t hate Schumer. But I wouldn’t shed any tears if a heart attack or a massive stroke were to relocate him to “the Other Side”.

“The Democratic base is furious at him for effectively permitting eight Democrats to vote with Republicans...”
I understand the power that a Senate leader can wield, but if Senators can only vote the way their party leader permits them, what’s the point of having them (votes or Senators)?

Pre-17th amendment, the Senators voted the way their states wanted.

I actually got to watch an entire Kabuki play featuring giant rats and the star descending from the top of the back of the theater to the stage. The stage hands are all dressed in black and the audience is supposed to pretend they can’t be seen.
Wonder who the stage hands are in the Senate?

Pre-17th amendment...
Yes, the 17th completely changed the relationship between the state government and the Federal government. A huge mistake in my opinion. Don’t know if we’d have better Senators or worse though.

For Chuck Schumer’s growing list of haters, there are two realities that are going to both excite and frustrate: He’s not going anywhere as Senate Democratic Leader, and it’s increasingly unlikely he’ll be reelected in 2028. What crap reporting.
He's not going to live forever, so yes, he will be going *somewhere*, and if he's not likely to run then he will also be going somewhere because he won't be holding office any more.

Somehow many State legislatures are a wretched hive of scum and villainy. [Even more so than Congress]
Letting them pick Senators these days would be unlikely to improve matters. [Maybe a one and one situation...]

Inner Party Socialists do not really like other Inner Party Socialists. Not a lot of loyalty or integrity to count on from others.

For the life of me, I don’t understand how the Democrats ended up in a position where their leaders in both houses of Congress were from the same state — and the same CITY in that state.
