The Shutdown Was Always Going To End With Democrats Caving And Looking Ridiculous

Tim Kaine

Barring some unnecessary Republican crash-out — always a high possibility! — this partial federal government “shutdown” was destined to end with Democrat leaders finally leveling with their own angry voters to say, Yeah, we got nothing, and I don’t have any good answers for you right now.

And that’s more or less what’s happening now that another five Senate Democrats have broken ranks with the party Sunday to start the reopening process, which is set to include funding for food stamps and “key” government agencies, plus backpay for furloughed federal workers. That’s it.

Unless you count the handshake agreement that the Republican-led Senate will also allow a vote to extend health insurance subsidies for noncitizens and working-aged people who currently get a discounted rate on their personal plans, courtesy of the American taxpayer. That’s the thing Democrats were demanding in exchange for their votes to end the shutdown. (Mind you, it’s just a promise that there will be a vote, not a guarantee that it will pass.)

Democrat activists are predictably mad about it. They were perfectly fine seeing thousands of people stuck in airports and without their food stamp benefits indefinitely, so long as it meant they could say they were “fighting” President Trump. They live for unrest and conflict if they can’t otherwise spend their time crushing the middle class and the nuclear family. But Democrat leaders have constituents outside of people who tweet and the panelists on CNN and MSNBC who live comfortably regardless of impaired government. Their states and districts are full of federal employees (Democrat voters) and food stamp recipients (Democrat voters).

And that was always what made the Democrats’ choice to...

They wanted to keep people pizzed off through the November 4 Election to win the Governor’s Mansion of VA and NJ.

It was a rousing success.

Yes, they wanted to excite the impressionable crowds to vote Dem in NJ, VA and CA.

But also, since THEORETICALLY the party with the House, Senate and Presidency are expected to run things efficiently and not have a shutdown every few months, then the GOP has been blamed by a small margin for causing the shutdown misery.

“Why can’t they do something up there in DC?”

That is harmful despite it being based on a hoary cliche.

In reality without destruction of the filibuster, a modest majority CANNOT get things done. So Trump had to the executive orders, which the little judges blocked and the SCOTUS may or may not allow.

Who thinks the Dems won’t get rid of the filibuster and our rights and freedoms the day they get in again? God forbid.

We all know the Democrats will eliminate the filibuster whenever they can next get a majority in the Senate. The Democrats say that same thing. We should believe them, and act accordingly.

Being "nice" to the Democrats offers no benefit to Republicans. Being a "loser, but holding on to principles of civic debate", still results in "being a loser". That has unpleasant consequences in the short run and never gets better in the long run.

Eventually, the Democrats will get a majority in the Senate. After that, it is "winner take all". Republicans in a minority position will get nothing - ever. There are a half dozen States which provide worked examples of this. They are all changing their systems now to ensure that Republicans can never again be elected there. Even supermajorities in the legislature are not enough for Democrats.

The basic hope for citizens of those States is that factional disputes within the Democrat party can allow the worst ideas of the Leftists to be delayed. Or the citizens can move somewhere else. That last action is not a good option if Democrats gain full control of the American government again.

A vision for the political future looks sub-optimal.

It is: "Do unto others - before they do unto you."

Eventually? Why? They once held it for almost 60 years with a few blips.

Why can’t Republicans keep building a majority they won’t lose for decades?

One way could be dumping the filibuster and actually getting real things done. Like spending control.

True. We don't want to be in that future where we are locked in the trailer of one of the semis traveling at night to our destination of the gulag outside the Dem Socialist city.

And saying "We lost but we can say we never cheated or violated our principles or broke the law. Didn't do us any good and millions will die but we were the good guys."

RE; They wanted to keep people pizzed off through the November 4 Election to win the Governor’s Mansion of VA and NJ.

If the anger is over the shutdown, why blame the party that voted 10 times to open the government? Shouldn’t the anger be against the party that wants to continue the shutdown?

The default position for Democrats (Duh!) and many Independents is to blame Republicans when anything bad occurs.

That's what happens after decades of public school indoctrination. 🙄

Worst of all, it is resulting in the complete leftwing takeover of the party.

You can cheer Pelosi and Schumer leaving all you want. You aren’t going to like what replaces them.

Why can’t Republicans keep building a majority they won’t lose for decades?

It is very hard to beat the offer of "free stuff" that "somebody else" is made to pay for. Envy, resentment, and greed are big motivators for way too many people. The Democrats have always been good at exploiting those motivators in the name of some noble-sounding cause. Republicans have never been good at offering an appealing counterproposal.

There are reasons the Democrats have been called the Evil Party and the Republicans have been called the Stupid Party.

I can only hope that things have changed.

I salute all the ones who have optimistic attitudes and plans. That is the way things do change.
