Seattle might elect its first democratic socialist mayor by an incredibly slim margin of 65 votes if the candidate maintains the same percentage of votes she received in the most recent batch of counted ballots.
Katie Wilson, 43, closed the gap between herself and mayoral incumbent Bruce Harrell to within 4,300 votes on Friday - a less than two percent gap - as ballots continue to trickle in since election day on November 4.
The incredibly tight race, which has swung back and forth in the week since the general election, still has 50,000 ballots remaining to be counted.
Former mayor Gregory Nickels calculated that if Wilson takes 54.85 percent of those uncounted ballots, like she did with Friday's batch, she would win by just 65 votes.
'Yeah this will be close,' the former mayor wrote on Facebook.
If elected, Wilson would be the first democratic socialist mayor of Seattle, echoing the recent victory of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, who handily won the general election in New York City by nine points.
Like Mamdani, Wilson has run on a campaign characterized by promises to increase affordability in the expensive city. Another core part of her platform is addressing Seattle's homelessness crisis, which is one of the worst in the country.
But critics have called Wilson privileged and out of touch, as the 43-year-old candidate regularly receives checks from her professor parents to pay for childcare.
Those critics also highlight Wilson dropping out of Oxford University just six weeks before graduation, debt free thanks to her parents.
Harrell's reelection website highlights a quote from Carolyn Riley-Payne, former Seattle King County NAACP President, who said: 'It’s hard to trust a candidate running on their challenges with affordability when her family’s wealth shields her from actual consequences and financial stress.

65 votes got conjured up for her I see...the tradition continues...vote fraud
“...as ballots continue to trickle in since election day on November 4.”
“The incredibly tight race, which has swung back and forth in the week since the general election, still has 50,000 ballots remaining to be counted.”
There is zero excuse why this election couldn’t and shouldn’t have been wrapped up by now.
I can understand if they needed 24 hours.
Not one week.
Same as in NYC. Exact same
You clearly didn’t even read the article.
“65 votes got conjured up for her I see...the tradition continues...vote fraud”
They haven’t been ‘gotten’ yet.
it has never been close, but the prognosticators have claimed that she will gain massive numbers of votes as they continue counting
So far she’s not in.
Took three counts to get the Princes in as governor ... King county and won by 128 votes that were found.
I have thought for a long time that New York City and Seattle needed enemas.
It looks like the Joker’s on them.
Washington state’s elections are curious.
The longer it takes to count the votes, all the ones last counted swing to the far left candidate or issue.
I’m sure this is just an anomaly. (Sarc).
“Wilson has run on a campaign characterized by promises to increase affordability in the expensive city”
A democrat, a socialist at that, promises to make a city more affordable. Thats NEVER going to happen.
Give democrats the reins of power over a city and they make it much too expensive to live and survive for everyone except the rich and wealthy. Wilson will prove to be no different.
Red states like Florida and Texas are prospering while the blue states self-destruct by electing woke idiots.
A comment found on the link:
“As soon as you ask a student if he would give his A to somebody else who got F for both of them to be equal, they immediately refuse so. We need start educating people.”
One thing that might be done is to prohibit the interstate sale of new mortgage debt.
If Seattle crashes its housing market, the financial pain would be most intense in the State of Washington.
Election was Nov 3 and they are still counting today. Make it make sense.
FRAUD.
I remember, they “found” a box of ballets after the first two recounts and the court said they had to be counted.
