Democrats Might Miss Pelosi More Than They Expect

Some Democrats and most Republicans thought Pelosi was wrong from time to time during her 39 years in the House, 20 of them as leader of her party’s caucus. But nobody doubted her resolution, her vote-counting skills, her sheer political chops, and — most of all — her toughness in tight spots. But nobody doubted her resolution, her vote-counting skills, her sheer political chops, and — most of all — her toughness in tight spots. Her gradual relinquishment of power in Washington (and soon in San Francisco) made her a regular symbol of Democratic gerontocracy. But hardly anyone who wished that she would gracefully retire imagined that her successors at the top of the Washington Democratic power pyramid would equal her leadership qualities.. But hardly anyone who wished that she would gracefully retire imagined that her successors at the top of the Washington Democratic power pyramid would equal her leadership qualities.

Though she is the epitome of a party loyalist, Pelosi has never hesitated to push Democrats in the direction she thought best. At a time when Senate Democrats were stampeding to back...

If I recall correctly, the last time she ran for re-election the woman who tried to primary her was a screaming, lunatic communist. I suspect that someone of that ilk will replace Nancy and we all may end up missing her. (Turns head and spits.)

Pelosi ruled the Democrats in the House with an iron fist unmatched since the days of Sam Rayburn

She is leaving at a time when the Democrat party is in parallel generational and ideological civil wars. Nobody in the Democrat senior leadership is going to be able to match her ability to maintain House discipline.

Pelosi is an unusually evil and unprincipled politician which is saying a lot given the level of competition.

Look, I dislike Pelosi as much as you can and absolutely HATE everything she ever did except installing Harris in 2024.

But she was the most effect speaker for her party in 100 years. She got it done.

Wait— after nearly continuous single-party domination from 1933 to 2017, we have a civilization?!?
