In a landslide election, California voters approved Proposition 50, a ballot measure that reconfigures the state’s U.S. House map temporarily in a response to Republican gerrymandering efforts in other states. The approved measure will set the stage for a competitive midterm election next year as Democrats go head-to-head with Republicans in their battle to win back the House.
The Associated Press called the race as soon as polls closed in California at 8 p.m. The special election attracted 7.2 million early voters as of Monday, according to the data from the California Secretary of State's office. AP wrote on its results page for Prop. 50 that it called the race immediately based on the fact that "the No side was significantly outspent and stopped spending in the final days. Public polling in the leadup showed California residents were largely supportive of the measure. Preliminary results from the AP Voter Poll pointed in the same direction."
"AP only makes such a call if all evidence suggests an overwhelming victory," the outlet added.
No vote totals were immediately available from the Secretary of State's office at the time of the call, but roughly 10 minutes later, the office published new vote totals. As of 10 p.m., with just over 64% of the vote tallied, the “Yes” side was leading with 64.7% of the vote. In the Bay Area, “Yes” won all nine counties by hearty margins, with Marin and San Francisco counties leading the way with over 81% and 84% voting “Yes,” respectively. Alameda was close behind with over 80% of voters approving the measure.

Which sets off the redistricting race in the rest of the country.
And boosts Governor Newsom’s race for 2028
Casual observation of the number of people in the last day or so sporting “I Voted” stickers seemed to indicate participation on the level of a general election, not an off-year election with a single issue on the ballot.
I wonder how many of these “I Voted” people could explain why they voted the way they did. The article indicates that support was overwhelming in the nine (deep deep blue) Bay Area counties, while “predictably” (editorializing) the counties in the northeast corner of the state opposed the measure.
Was this an “anti-Trump” temper tantrum? The “Yes on 50” ads certainly marketed it as such.
How many of these voters supported the Prop. 20 redistricting measure back in 2010? Prop. 50 moved to undo it.
My guess is a little of immigrants voted in favor.
A Republican Congress can cede many of the low-income Democratic areas of California back to Mexico unless the Proposition 50 panel adopts a redistricting map prepared by the RNC.
Public employees would be working for Mexican-level salaries afterwards, unless they were fired for not being fluent in Español.
Private sector workers would find people from Ciudad de Mexico will work for less.
Section 8 vouchers would vanish.
SNAP cards would become souvenirs.
You want the real definition of a threat to democracy?
Start with eliminating all dissenting opinions.
The rest is a piece of cake . . .
I hope so. The Dems are already mostly maxxed out nationwide.
Too bad most elected republicans are cowards because red states could easily win the gerrymandering arms race against the Dems.
Usually, each side presents an argument - and there is even a rebuttal of the opponents' argument.
Regards,
If you haven’t seen the district map that CA voters just passed, it’s absolutely insane, with more than 90% of the 52 districts specifically designed to have a GOP minority... which is quite am accomplishment in a state where Trump won nearly 40% of the vote in 2024.
GOP-controlled governors/legislatures in other states absolutely must respond in kind.
Repubs. Time to go
Hopefully the states with Republican majorities in the legislature will grow a pair and respond in kind. The dems fight to win. The republicans just want to be “liked”. The gloves have to come off.
The GOP is DOA as Trump is not doing well if you look at the numbers...

We tend to fool ourselves that the country is turning to the right. Look at New Jersey, New York, Virginia, California. Not a good trend.
Blue, blue, blue and blue. So, nothing changed. It would have been nice to flip Jersey and Virginia but, nothing changed.
I’m sure voters thought if Texas can do it, we should too. This one I can’t say I blame the voters. States rights were on the ballot in this election.
