(NEXSTAR) – States are warning SNAP recipients that their eligibility for food assistance could change as a November deadline to comply with the One Big Beautiful Bill approaches.
The mega-bill, which passed into law over the summer, overhauls the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), which provides food assistance to more than 42 million. The changes are expected to squeeze some people out of the program as federal spending on the program is cut by an estimated $186 billion over the next decade...
New work requirements and fewer exceptions
A big change to the program has to do with ABAWDs – or able-bodied adults without dependents. Put simply, able-bodied adults need to prove they are working at least 80 hours a month, pursuing an education, or in a training program to keep qualifying for SNAP. Without proof, they can only receive benefits for a maximum of three months...
Immigrant SNAP eligibility
The One Big Beautiful Bill changes “non-citizen eligibility for SNAP,” including some groups of people in the country legally.
Refugees, those who have been granted asylum, and human trafficking survivors will all be affected and lose benefits, says Oregon’s Department of Human Services, in a memo announcing the changes…
More changes to come
Other provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill will also result in cuts to who can receive food assistance and how much families qualify for, critics say. The law limits how annual cost-of-living adjustments are calculated, changes how utilities can be calculated toward households’ need, and eliminates funding for the SNAP Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Grant Program..

This cant happen soon enough...
I voted for this!
Isn’t Dr. Ben Carson now involved in this program as a ‘Consultant’ of sorts? Thought I read of that, here...
If people are hungry, use the Food Pantries! Use the Churches! Use whatever Bleeding Heart you can find to feed you - they’re everywhere.
Or, maybe get a job? Just sayin’...
Long overdue
The program needs to be slashed and slashed again. We eat just fine spending 1/3 less on food than the government hands out on SNAP and that’s not counting all the perks like free phone, free internet, free events, discounted utilities, blah, blah, blah. Someone please tell me why school meals aren’t deducted - 180 free breakfasts and 180 free lunches and the free weekend food backpack program and free summer lunches. The food pantry food, church and other charities also aren’t deducted. All that adds up to a boatload of extras. It is no wonder they have been so overloaded with food that they’ve been able to sell food stamps, aka our tax dollars, for 50 cents on the dollar for generations.
The big evil behind all of this is centralized government with money.
There should be 50 states with different ideas on solving problems as our Founders designed.
This is the essence of MAGA if you look behind the curtain.
The gnashing and wailing in Oregon going to be massive

But, oh, the horrors they are now being required to either be in school/training or work, gasp, 80 hours a month.
Whew, if you don’t want your blood pressure to explode and have a stroke, don’t do a search for youtube food pantry “hauls” (can’t stand that term) where they complain over what they are given. They gripe about it not being kosher and toss it into the garbage instead of giving it to a neighbor or leaving it the food pantry. They gripe about the pistachios that are just cracked and the shell has to be flicked off. Or the worst ones who use the pantry foods during the week so they video their food stamp, aka “yamps”, purchases of steak and huge seafood feasts on the weekends.
At one time, people were embarrassed to be on welfare. At one time, they were given commodities and couldn’t purchase junk food. At one time, foreigners had to have jobs and sponsors. Today, it is one big free party in 5 star hotels with housekeeping and laundry service.
I recall when Clinton imposed a work requirement on Food Stamps— a whole bunch of recipients just disappeared from the rolls.
I’m so old I can remember when poor people could feed themselves.
It is important to keep up with the approved lingo.
I agree. I know of someone while living with her family got herself pregnant, had the baby, got on SNAP and was still living with her family. Thanks to taxpayer’s this will only continue.

Not always, there was the great depression of course but in my own childhood we sometimes didn’t have food and those were rough times.
The program has been abused for too long. In California, I've seen people pull up in expensive cars and then use an EBT card to pay for their groceries.
I've been told on this very site that these receipts are fake and/or photoshopped but I believe they are very real and a reflection of the abuses going on with the "food stamp" program.
True that. Now it's obesity is a sign of poverty. LOL
Dims make me want to throwup orange. Not that Auburn orange you can sit with. (typed in my best data engineer Irvin Carney voice)
My worthless step-son moved out right after he graduated from HS, but in less than a year he limped his sorry butt home and he had been receiving Food Stamps! There is something wrong with a healthy 19-year kid can apply and receive these benefits. This was in 2018. I took his EBT card away, cancelled the benefits and dropped him off at the Marine Corps recruiting center
I agreed, until at the age of 72 I am undergoing Cancer treatments and can lift a remote, take a walk, but I surely cannot walk. The program seemingly was invented for people like me, who cost the govt nothing but food benefits every month. My house is paid off, I pay utilities, and live a crime free life. What to do about old people who became disabled from disease or injury before retirement? That is dead center bullseye of who should be helped. Not the young single women baby factories. People line up to be them, but nobody wants to get Cancer at 64, and go through 8 years of treatments.
Ive noticed that this subject does tend to bring out some ridiculous opinions and causes many of the internet gullible to out themselves.
I don’t get how people get large chunks of money for food.
There are people in genuine need, and I thank Daddy govt for all he throws my way, and the Lord for giving me more time.
