House GOP leaders are facing increasing pressure to bring the chamber back to Washington amid a shutdown fight with no end in sight.
A growing number of GOP lawmakers are voicing frustrations with their leadership for prolonging the House recess, warning that the optics surrounding that inactivity could backfire on the party to the benefit of Democrats.
The rumbling is creating a headache for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and his leadership team, who have made canceling votes a central part of the Republicans’ shutdown strategy. In doing so, they’re betting that an empty House will pile pressure on Senate Democrats to drop their opposition to a GOP spending bill and help reopen the government.
But as the shutdown crept into its second week, neither side has given an inch, causing federal workers to receive diminished paychecks on Friday and threatening a similar pay squeeze on military personnel, who are at risk of missing their first scheduled paycheck next Wednesday.
Those pressure points have only amplified the calls from within the GOP conference for Johnson to reconvene the chamber, if only to move legislation to ensure the troops are compensated.

He won’t because of that guy we’re all obsessed with.
Yes, Epstein! “”””
Nobody cares about a dead guy.
I see that The Hill is back to thinking it is relevant.
Pressure? lol
From MSM and fed worker unions.
Nobody cares or notices the government has shut down.
Pay the military.
Cut the 90% of useless federal workers - which is ALL federal workers.
Call them back why should they be vacationing when there’s work to be done ,LOL
“A growing number of GOP lawmakers are voicing frustrations with their leadership for prolonging the House recess, warning that the optics surrounding that inactivity could backfire on the party to the benefit of Democrats.”
I doubt this. Has anyone even noticed the government is “shut down”? People in positions of power don’t like it when that power is removed. The GOP will not stand up and do what we want, because they are in the same group. Let the shutdown continue. Let the firings continue. Publish the results of the house cleaning.
The Dems wouldn’t have voted to shut down the government if they wanted to release the Epstein files.
The issue must be framed as a minority in the Senate thwarting democracy by passing a budget because they lost the election. Elections have consequences, and how the Senate gets away with requiring 60 votes on “discretionary spending” is a puzzler. The simple political message is the Rats lost the election, so they shut down the government to get what they want through extortion. What they want is more money for Big Insurance to profit from healthcare. It’s not about providing healthcare to anyone, but making sure Big Insurance gets its cut from Uncle Sam.
Yeah,I saw the title and thought it might be something. Then I saw it was The Hill. Didn’t read it.
The future of the PPACA is up in the air.
12 million Originals - average risk $500/month/person
12 million Newbys - average risk $50/month/person
you get
24 million Recipients - average risk $275/month/person
Unless the Newbys are retained by paying almost all their premiums, the Newbys will bow out and the risk per person and the premiums per covered person will almost double.
The insurance companies have to set their premiums for November marketing and they need to know what the average risk per person per age group is going to be real soon.
Would you, Mr. Healthy, like health insurance for less than $10/month?
The answer is probably going to be yes, even if the health insurance is junk.
Would you, Mr. Healthy, like health insurance for less than $100/month?
The answer might well be no. Mr. Healthy is very unlikely to benefit from health insurance, but he will get zapped with late fees if he doesn’t pay his bills. He will very likely get evicted if he falls behind on his rent.
Yes, pay the military. But also pay the air traffic controllers. Pay the federal meat inspectors at the packing plants. Reopen the National Park Service and pay the people working the parks. Etc., etc.
Mike Johnson and the House Republicans have been trying all year to restore regular order to the passage of the routine authorization and appropriations bills. This is essential: agency by agency, program by program; no massive continuing resolutions and omnibus appropriations bills that no one has read.
The House has passed quite a few of these already. Mike Johnson is now arguing that the democrats should help pass a clean CR to give more time to continue the regular budget process. But since Congress (with a skeleton staff) keeps working during the shutdown, there is no reason to stop working the budget process for the duration. Keep it moving, and keep putting the democrats on the spot to pass the non-controversial but important functions that we are NOT arguing about.
That leaves the big, controversial matters to be dealt with in regular order. That is exactly what democrats want to avoid, because their strategy for avoiding substantive reform on the big issues is to hold the rest of the government hostage while insisting on a take-it-or-leave-it continuation (with growth) of everything.
The House should come back into session and put the democrats on the spot every day with narrowly targeted bills to reopen the parts of the government we all agree about. And we should be paying the “essential” employees who are in fact working. The democrats shouldn’t be allowed to hold everyone hostage.
They’re going to have to deal with the discharge petition on the Epstein files sooner or later. So deal with it and let the chips fall where they may.
Most people take the shutdown in stride because “essential” federal employees are still working. Those who are working should be getting paid.
Fake news.
The Hill is wishing, hoping & whistling in the dark.
the gubment shut down?
