Didn’t a boiler explode in the Bronx yesterday, shearing off a high rise brick wall from the roof down?

Boilers are not for the inexperienced. Water converted to steam is 1,100% more expansive than gasoline. A boiler is a very large bomb that is designed to function just shy of detonation. As it approaches critical pressures and temperatures, the flame modulates and the pop-offs vent.

Most boiler explosions occur from some knucklehead manager opening a valve to put cold water into a low water shut-down boiler. Kaboom!

Very few managers understand that an unsafe boiler has to cool all the way down before attempting to remedy the condition. That process can take days!

A live boiler requires a dedicated licensed boiler operator. There are very few. It's one of the hardest licenses to test for. Nobody gets that license as a DEI hire.

Under construction.

Looks like they were taking reservations starting end of December. I suspect that might get pushed back...

I worked on a lot of boilers bac when, old ones and new construction, and I’m trying to imagine how many things you would have to screw up, at the same time, to get one to explode.

Agas leak would be much more likely.

I remember one of my first jobs running a small plating line included lighting the boiler every morning. There was a gate valve for the gas and an electric spark lighter. There was an inspection glass where you could see the spark and wait for ignition. The glass would yellow over and a huge whoosh sound when it lit. Within seconds I would run for my life to get out the back door and put a steel door and brick wall between me and that boiler. I was just a kid, maybe 19, but I had tremendous respect/fear for that thing.

That’s the theory. An issue with the boiler caused a leak that let to the explosion that collapsed the incinerator shaft.

I’m always amazed that the navy’s of the world don’t have more boiler explosions. There have only been 3 reported in the past 50 years:

USS Basilone 5 February 1973 Marine (military)
USS Willamette 29 June 1995 Marine (military)
SS Norway 25 May 2003 Marine (civilian)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_boiler_explosions

There were a rash in 1912 and 1913, and quite a few earlier than that - likely due to new technology and the learning curve, but then only 1 other in 1943 before those noted above.
SS Cascades 1943 Marine (civilian)

Of course there were probably a lot that didn’t get reported as well.

Have y’all noticed it’s always a gas line or a boiler exploded blah blah blah. They’re hiding the true source of the explosion. Too many coincidences. Didn’t we just have an explosion somewhere near by yesterday or two days ago? Houston the newest illegal invaders home of the American hating Islamic terrorist Hamas! Texas is so screwed!

by 3 I meant the US ships, not globally. Globally since 1970 there were 12. Still a ridiculously low number given the number of boilers in my mind.

Sure. If you do manage to get one to go boom it will be horrific, no doubt.
