The United States government shutdown has begun — Oct. 1, 2025 — but for how long? Here's what to know about the longest shutdown in history and the betting odds on when a funding bill will pass.
President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans hit a stalemate with Democrats over health-care policy changes and failed to reach an agreement in the funding bill. Democrats blocked a Republican proposal to keep the government operating at existing funding levels through Nov. 21, resulting in the 10 government shutdown since 1980.
U.S. government shutdowns occur when funding legislation to finance the federal government is not passes before the next fiscal year begins. This causes federal agencies to shut down services and non-essential operations and furlough non-essential workers.
Essential government services that protect human life or property such as the military and law enforcement will keep working.
Here's what to know about how long a governement shutdown might last and what history shows.
When will the government shutdown end?
While there is no end in sight to the current governemtn shutdown that started on Oct. 1, 2025, Polymarket betting odds are favoring an Oct. 15th or later opening by 45%, between 21-23% belieivng it will be between Oct. 6-14, and less than 8% confidence that it will reopen within the first five days.
The Polymarket odds are high with 90% betting that Congress will pass a funding bill before October 31. If these odds were to pan out, it would not be the longest shutdown in U.S. history, albeit still among the most significant.
These odds were posted as of Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025 at 11 a.m.

When Will the Non-Essential Government Shutdown End
🪨
Depends on what crisis happens tomorrow
If I were a gambler, I would buy the 4-9 day at 23%.
The Dims are not known for long-term thought.
The shutdown needs to stay in place for as long as possible to keep ANY extension beyond the end of the year of the trillion dollar bailout of obamacare (free to all) from Biden admin expenditures. Ends obamacare for all.. for good instead of keeping on support. Because— this is all being used with illegals who should not get a penny!
