Columnist Karen Attiah says she was fired by The Washington Post last week over a series of social media posts about gun control and race in the wake of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
“As a columnist, I used my voice to defend freedom and democracy, challenge power and reflect on culture and politics with honesty and conviction,” Attiah wrote in a post on Substack published Monday. “Now, I am the one being silenced — for doing my job.”
In writings on the social platform Bluesky, Attiah bemoaned that America, in her view, “accepts and worships” gun violence.
“I pointed to the familiar pattern of America shrugging off gun deaths, and giving compassion for white men who commit and espouse political violence,” she wrote in the subsequent Substack post.
“My only direct reference to Kirk was one post— his own words on record,” she said, including a screenshot of a quote in which Kirk said several prominent Black women “do not have brain processing power to be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot.”
The Post, the columnist said, “accused my measured Bluesky posts of being ‘unacceptable’, ‘gross misconduct’ and of endangering the physical safety of colleagues — charges without evidence, which I reject completely as false.”
“They rushed to fire me without even a conversation,” Attiah said. “This was not only a hasty overreach, but a violation of the very standards of journalistic fairness and rigor the Post claims to uphold.”
A Post spokesperson decline to comment and pointed The Hill to the news outlet’s publicly-available social media policy and standards for its journalists.
Attiah had been a columnist with the Post for more than a decade.

When the Washington Post fires you for left wing insanity posts (they did not in the past) one knows the poster has drifted from left wing to full blown Marxists violent revolution.
She was fired for lying through her teeth about something Charlie supposedly said (which he absolutely did not).
She seems to be surprised by being held accountable.
She is doubling down on stupid.
“Attiah, who spent 11 years at the paper and was the last remaining full-time black person on its opinion page......”
11 years is a long time. This dufus thought she had lifetime tenure at the Washingtoon Post. How much does this opining job pay? Probably not that much, but opining for the Washingtoon Post gives you elevated status in Liberal Land, that leads to speaking engagements. Especially collecting your payoffs/paydays at colleges and universities. My guess worth a minimum $250,000 yearly.
She has a sky high opinion of herself.
Apparently, her former employer does not share that level of enthusiasm. They probably see her more as a
Problem Employee, the kind who tends to drag her whole company through the rhetorical mud from time to time, just to make ‘news’.
I’m not seeing the problem.
L
I’m not unhappy.
The Washington knew what she was when they hired her and that was the reason they did. This says more about the Washington Post than her. She is naught but a propagandist and liar. The Washington Post knew what they were hiring.
It’s gratifying to see the haters being held accountable but I fear we’re destined to over correct.
“Have Lies. Will Travel!”
I've been there and done that on the conservative side. Little or no sympathy from anyone nor help with defense of my statements (which were truth, just like Kirk). I did not even get to make public comments in my defense like all of you leftists have done. No outlet was made available to me and no one cared. You folks have done that to conservatives ever since I started working MANY years ago with no consequences. I have to hold my comments in reserve to not escalate this ugly situation even more.
As usual, ropes for hair. Unwashed dirty hair. Ropes of dirty hair.
She doesn’t care abt Charlie but thinks we should care abt her? Not gonna happen
Karen, meet karma. Karen, karma is a bitch . . .

“Hi, neighbor, and remember, that parking spot in front of my house is for me and only me, not your Boyfriend, not your Baby-Daddy either!”
She HAD Black Privilege.......BYE, Karen, go stew in your LYING HATRED!!
If her characterization of what happened is accurate, she may have reason to call the Washington Post a pack of hypocrites, but she has no reason to get upset for being fired. The mystery is how she could have been there that long without knowing they lacked any integrity.
