Bolsonaro sentenced to 27 years for plotting military coup in Brazil

razil’s former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for plotting a military coup and seeking to “annihilate” the South American country’s democracy.

Justices Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha and Cristiano Zanin ruled on Thursday that Bolsonaro – a former paratrooper who was elected president in 2018 – was guilty of seeking to forcibly cling to power after losing the 2022 election, meaning four of the five judges involved in the trial had found Brazil’s former leader guilty.

Announcing Bolsonaro’s sentence for crimes including coup d’etat and violently attempting to abolish Brazil’s democracy on Thursday night, the supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes said: “[He tried to] annihilate the essential pillars of the democratic rule-of-law state … the greatest consequence [of which] … would have been the return of dictatorship to Brazil.”

They convicted Bolsonaro last night for "leading an armed criminal gang". Pretty much over the top language and plotting to assassinate the chief justice along with the now left-wing president Lula.

Trump said it was a witch hunt of a trial.

Jailing him is in fact part of their coup.

Bookmarked for prayer.

Charlie Kirk would have totally spent a segment on this and I know many Brazilians have been influenced by him too.

Bolsonaro should have gotten out of the country that’s for sure. Trump could have offered safe haven. Now he is screwed

This pretty much assures a one-party system in Brazil. That’s what the Left means by “progress”.

That's crazy.

Bolsonaro was already tied down and unable to leave, even before Trump was elected a second time.

The same thing that the RATs wanted to do to Trump with the J6 trials.

I am not in favor of intervention in every circumstance. However, if Delta Force or Navy Seals snatched Bolsonaro out of the Brazilian prison, that would be fine. The United States needs to raise tariffs on Brazil to punitive levels, ditto for Venezuela and Columbia. We can get coffee and bananas elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Lula was sentenced to 17 years in jail, but didn’t even serve two years of his sentence.

They said on the news the US has sanctioned the judges and imposed 50% tariffs

But yes, a rescue effort should be on the cards

I am aware this started well before Trump announced his candidacy for 24. Bolsonaro should have left Brazil as a first step.

That would look a lot like the effort to rescue Mussolini when his people decided they’d had enough of him.

Of course, if somehow our military rescued Bolsonaro, the chattering class and the establishment media would bring up the rescue of Mussolini by Otto Skorzeny under Hitler's orders. OTOH, the same sources would denounce "Orange Man Bad" if he cured cancer and brokered peace between Russia and Ukraine.

Of course, this may be fantasy as Brazil is a huge populous nation, with the resources to lock Bolsonaro in the equivalent of a SuperMax prison guarded by a division.
