A truck driver who spent only four years behind bars after killing half a junior ice hockey team in a horror crash is fighting deportation to India.
Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, 36, barreled through a stop sign at 53 to 60mph and a bus carrying 29 players and staff from the Humboldt Broncos couldn't stop in time.
The bus collided with the truck's front trailer, killing 16 and injuring 13 in the crash at about 5pm on April 6, 2018, in rural Saskatchewan, Canada.
Sidhu was jailed for eight years in March 2019 but was released on parole after four years and four months behind bars.
He returned to his suburban life with his Canadian wife and the couple had a baby soon after he was released, who has severe heart and lung complications.
Sidhu's case is similar to that of Harjinder Singh, who killed three people when he made an illegal U-turn across two lanes of traffic on August 12.
His sentence and subsequent deportation battle may be a glimpse into the future for those affected by last week's tragedy on the Florida Turnpike.
Like Singh, Sidhu was an immigrant from India, arriving in Canada in 2014, where he eventually was granted permanent residency.
It emerged soon after the 2019 tragedy that Sidhu had committed 70 violations of federal and provincial trucking regulations in the 11 days leading up to the crash.
Most of those were discrepancies in his log book, which is designed to monitor how much time drivers spend on the road to prevent them becoming dangerously fatigued.
Sidhu's permanent residency was revoked early last year and the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada ordered his deportation.

Newsom has a job for him.
Shows how valuable life is to Canuckistanis.
Even less than Indian Indians.
“the couple had a baby soon after he was released,”
How soon?
He’s running a truck driving school now. /S
Here are a few lines from a law office protecting undocumented people.
The U.S. legal system is designed to protect people who are injured in accidents, regardless of their immigration status. Law enforcement officers or insurance companies are not required to report your immigration status when you file a claim. Your accident claim is a civil matter, and your immigration status will not be considered in that regard.
Car Accidents Generally Do Not Impact Immigration Status
In most cases, a car accident will not affect your immigration status. Being involved in a car accident is unrelated to immigration enforcement or visa violations. U.S. immigration law does not consider car accidents as a reason to deny or revoke someone’s immigration status.
It’s essential to understand that filing a car accident claim or being involved in a car accident does not automatically lead to a review of your immigration status. The two are separate legal matters.
Legal Protections for Immigrants in Car Accident Claims
Under U.S. law, all individuals, regardless of immigration status, have the right to seek compensation for injuries caused by a car accident. Discrimination based on immigration status is illegal when it comes to filing personal injury claims. So, even if you are an undocumented immigrant, you have the same legal right to file a claim for damages, including medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, as anyone else.

Its Canada
The place is so mental, don’t be surprised if they give Sidhu a medal of freedom or something.
How on Earth is he still ALIVE???
I feel sorry for this guy, he was driving a truck route for the first time and the intersection was two equally used secondary highways, he was driving right into the setting sun, I don’t think he even saw a stop sign. The bus had the right of way and drove into him at full speed. The person who should be doing jail time is the person who designed the highway intersection and may have failed to place rumble strips or other warning signs. It would obviously have been safer to make it a four-way stop or controlled by traffic lights. That said, in legal terms the driver of the truck was guilty of criminal negligence causing death.
Just one of those terrible things that happens in an imperfect world. Planes crash, vehicles collide, people get dragged into court for a few words they post on the internet, people die of awful diseases that we cannot control.
Life sucks. I’m sure you noticed.
Also not really just like the Florida case. The Canadian driver spoke fluent English. He was a legal immigrant to Canada. His violations of rules are obviously not a good thing but a lot of truckers bend rules to make their living, and not all of them are Indo-Canadians. Employers are often the prime culprits, they more or less say, you figure it out, if you want more work from us. Everyone knows this.
This dude is a legal immigrant to Canada. He speaks fluent English. The driver from CA was neither.
The Canadian missed a stop sign blinded by sun in his eyes. Very different from trying to make a U-turn on an Interstate with a 18 wheeler truck.
Glad it wasn’t one of my kids. Hell with the driver. The PEOPLE who let him out, ALL of them who have names and addresses. This is not Justice.
CanCuckIstan is a lost cause.
Is Jaskirat considering a career in driving?
Run the bum over with a similar truck.
The illegals’ countries are just kicking their worthless asses out and sending them to America. America is using them to kill us. WTF! Don’t Americans get some “due process?”
70 VIOLATIONS IN 11 DAYS??????
EVEN THE MANSON FAMILY DIDN’T DO THAT.
Sounds like a candidate for "Canadian Health Care."
"Medical Assistance in Dying" (MAID) is all the rage there.
Seriously: The disregard for human life evinced in this article is stunning.
