D.C.’s Murder Rate Is More Than 500% Higher Than The Average State
The Federalist ^ | August 20, 2025 | John R. Lott Jr.

D.C.’s murder rate ran 169 percent higher than Louisiana’s, the deadliest state, and an astonishing 523 percent higher than that of the average state.

Democrats insist Washington, D.C., doesn’t face a crime problem.

On a podcast last week, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D–NY, claimed, “I walk around all the time. I wake up early in the morning … And I feel perfectly safe.” He dismissed Republican concerns about safety as “full of it,” but, of course, Schumer doesn’t go anywhere without his security detail. In a similar vein, D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen called the federalization of law enforcement “unnecessary, unwarranted,” and the D.C. Council emphasized that crime rates are at “the lowest rates we’ve seen in 30 years.”

Yet even MSNBC host Joe Scarborough admitted that Democrats privately acknowledge the problem. On his show last week, he said Democrats had called him in recent days, saying, “Washington should have gotten involved years ago. This place is dangerous, it’s a mess, it’s a wreck.” Scarborough noted that those same Democrats then rush to Twitter to attack Republicans, denouncing federal intervention as “the worst outrage of all time.”

Those who have visited a CVS or Walgreens in D.C. can see the reality: Everything sits behind plexiglass. That isn’t surprising, since the city’s property crime rate runs 49 percent higher than the most crime-ridden state.

So what do the numbers really show?

First, the debate centers only on crimes reported to police — which are far fewer than the crimes actually committed. Nationally, victims report about 40 percent of violent crimes and 30 percent of property crimes. When criminals face little risk of being caught or punished, reporting drops even...

Washington is the murder capital of the country, and has been for a long time.

democrats don’t care if blacks kill other blacks. They just don’t want to put blacks in prison for killing other blacks because that would look racist.

So they allow blacks to kill blacks.

Trump is jailing the blacks who kill other people, reducing the number of blacks killed. And the democrats are $hitting their pants over it.

What, oh what, could the common factor be for all these high crime areas?

Democrats will make it a state if they get the chance.

D.C. Police, Metro Police, and Capitol Police let the niglets run amok and don't arrest them contributing to the high crime and murder rate. I personally saw utes running amok on the Metro and watched the LE ignore them as they harassed the white folks.

Someone ask Schumer to put his money where his mouth is. Have him escort his wife for a walk around DC from 7PM to 5AM without a security detail. He won’t do that cuz he knows they would both be dead before sunrise. The best outcome he could hope for is that they only get mugged followed by an old fashioned beatdown.

The population in Washington, DC, is just 700,000 and should be compared to US cities:

“Murder Rates in Major Cities
A common misconception is that the cities with larger populations have the highest murder rates. New York City, for example, has a population of 8.39 million people but with 300 murders and a murder rate of 3.4 in 2017, it doesn’t even make it into the top 50 cities.

St. Louis, Missouri has the highest murder rate of any US city of 69.4 murders per 100,000 people. In 2017, 205 people were murdered in St. Louis. The high likelihood of violence is attributed to the parts of the city, such as East St. Louis, that experience conditions that increase this likelihood such as unsafe housing, a failing economy, and poor school systems.

The Las Vegas murder rate is 31.4, which includes the 58 people who were tragically killed in the 2017 mass shooting at a country music festival.

Recent Trends
Although murder rates in US cities are extremely high compared to other countries, some cities are experiencing their lowest numbers of murders in years. Newark, New Jersey had 72 murders in 2017, down from 94 in 2016. New York City’s 300 murders in 2017 is the lowest number the city has had since the 1950s.”

Last time I was in downtown DC, bellbottoms and faded jeans were still in fashion, and it was really bad back then, too.

The last time I was in D.C. was sometime in early 2000. I used to go there on vacation to do research at the National Archives, so I never went anywhere else. I was there during the day only, and left when the Archives closed. Stayed with a friend who lived in Clinton, Md. back then.

It is not “fair” to compare Washington DC, a city, to a state. Rather compare it to Baltimore, Philly, Pit, Cin, Clev, Chi, Milwaukee, Detroit.

Even more precisely, compare neighborhoods. When I was in Chicago, the Gay Northside entertainment area had the highest crime rate, not the South or Westside ghettos (I lived on the border between Westside and NW side)....But the MSM does not cover everything equally and few know the real crime rate.

Did you read the piece? If you read it, you will see that it also discusses the crime rates in cities. But it might also be relevant to compare it to states given that Democrats want to make DC a state.

No, I didn’t. But it’s not a state or like a state. It is of course sui generis. I’m no fan of corrupt city managements, including DC’s, but it is misleading to compare it to a state instead of a city.

And if you’re John Lott, I’m a big fan of your work.

Robbery paints the bleakest picture. D.C.’s robbery rate was 370 percent higher than Maryland, the worst state

Maryland's only 2nd place in robberies??? C'mon, Annapolis, yer slacking!
