Republicans in Texas: Endangering the Senate Majority?
American Thinker ^ | August 20, 2025 | Alex Adkins

The state of Texas is generating considerable buzz ahead of the 2026 midterm elections regarding its efforts to redraw the state’s congressional districts. Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate race is starting to turn heads on the Republican side, as incumbent Republican senator John Cornyn faces a tightly contested primary challenge from Attorney General Ken Paxton, which could turn a non-competitive race into a Democrat pickup.

Indeed, primary voting is less than a year away, and Paxton has led Cornyn in more polls than not, which conventional wisdom suggests will make this race come down to the wire. Paxton's strength comes from his ties to the MAGA base and his ability to win statewide elections.

He won his current position as Texas attorney general in 2014 and, despite scandals emerging, won re-election by a margin of only three points in 2018. However, he then defeated George P. Bush, the nephew of former President Bush, in the runoff in 2022 by over 30 points, serving as the incumbent. He then won the midterm election handily by a margin of nearly double digits.

Despite this, national Republicans are ringing the alarm bell about the prospect of Ken Paxton as Senate nominee due to scandals in his personal and financial life. In 2023, Attorney General Paxton faced impeachment on 16 accounts, but the state legislature acquitted him of wrongdoing. He ultimately paid $300,000 in restitution for fraud charges dating back to 2015, when he was a state senator.

As a result, the Cornyn campaign is banking on the premise that Paxton’s polling lead will dwindle once voters become exposed to Paxton's immoral and legally questionable actions. The Senator’s re-election team even channeled their inner Trump by coining the phrase...

Despite this, national Republicans are ringing the alarm bell about the prospect of Ken Paxton as Senate nominee due to (fake) scandals in his personal and financial life.

Word is Texas AG Paxton is considering joining Dan Bongino, DOJ weaponization chief Ed Martin and former Missouri AG Andrew Bailey in Bondi's federal strike forces targeting Deep State criminals.

Since John “Wayne” Cornyn IS, for all intents and purposes, a DEMOCRAT, what appears to be the problem?

Gosh, a Republican primary would help elect a Democrat?

If this was true, that a Republican primary to get rid of a rhino would help elect a Democrat then the media would not be warning us.

They would be all for it.

They just don’t want a RINO to be ousted for a trump supporter

What’s the primaries are over it still one Republican against one Democrat

That’s how I saw it. I hate pearl clutchers whining about purity over fake scandals.

Those are resume enhancements for Dems.

Chairman is- Wu was born in Guangzhou in Guangdong province, China.[4] Shortly after, his family immigrated to the United States and lived in Odessa, Texas, before moving to Sharpstown, a neighborhood in Southwest Houston. He attended Ed White Elementary, Fondren Middle School, and St. Thomas Episcopal School.
Wu received a B.S. from Texas A&M University, a Master of Public Affairs from the LBJ School for Public Affairs[5] at the University of Texas at Austin, and earned a J.D. degree from the South Texas College of Law in Houston.[6]

That’s fine. My question is- why would anyone from a foreign country be so interested in our public policy and laws. I mean that’s a lot of studying

Why are so many people with foreign cktizenships so interested?

This guy who’s about to take over as mayor of NYC is Ugandan. Has not given up his Ugandan citizenship

The mayor of Boston is from Taiwanese parents. They said:
“ Wu’s parents hoped that she would pursue a career in medicine; in part due to their experiences of the Chinese Civil War, they viewed politics as a corrupt and risky career path. Wu has also recounted that prior to university, she had not known whether she aligned with the Democratic or Republican parties.[“

Are Americans, particularly at this point, Texans not able to get into and maintain scholarship in our universities?

No interest in running the country being given over to foreigners not via the southern border, but in our universities and through an elected office system that can’t care that the elected leaders are not us citizens or in many cases dual citizens?

I mean Obama was a problems we haven’t even addressed yet

Despite his principled stands on issues, Paxton’s personal conduct is maddening. Fully knowing he was about to take on the formidable task of taking down Cornyn, he couldn’t keep his zipper zipped with his latest mistress. Going through a messy and embarrassing divorce during the campaign will weaken him among a sizable contingent of the GOP primary voters. If he survives, Colin Allred already has his TV ads showcasing his beautiful wife and children ready to go. Cruz bear Allred by 9 points, but didn’t carry that type of baggage. Paxton should bow out and go to work in the Trump administration.

At the presidential level:
Easy path to renomination:
Nixon 72 Reagan 84 Clinton 96 Bush 04 Obama 12
More difficult path to nomination
Ford 76 Carter 80 Bush 92
Exceptions:
Trump 20 Biden 24

Buchanan didn’t come all that close to beating Bush but compared to 1972 and 1984 he did well for a challenger.

I’ve not seen similar data at the US Senate level.

The Paxton “impeachment” trial was a hoot. There is nothing more fun than watching Tony Buzbee skin a room full of people.

The person writing this, doesn’t know real Texans or how we think.
No one we know is going to vote for that RINO Cornyn.
The polls are being manipulated

That’s what the actual problem is. So few people vote in primaries that the incumbent almost always wins.

AOC was an exception to that because they got a considerable turnout for her, to defeat an incumbent.

In some districts a considerable turnout in a primary could be as simple as a couple of dozen votes. That’s where you oust RINO Republicans

Oh no, AOC’s first primary had low turnout (compared to other years for that seat). Crowley had a huge war chest, but he didn’t campaign much. It takes more than a couple of dozen votes to win a US Congress primary.
