Washington is “done with the funding” of Ukraine’s war against Russia, JD Vance, the US vice-president, has said, as Europe scrambles to build a united defence before in-person negotiations between Presidents Trump and Putin.
Speaking in an interview after an emergency summit with European and Ukrainian officials, co-hosted by David Lammy at Chevening, the foreign secretary’s mansion in Kent, Vance said Americans were fed up with paying towards the cost of the war.
“What we said to the Europeans is simply, first of all, this is in your neck of the woods. This is in your back door,” he told Fox News. “You guys have got to step up and take a bigger role in this thing. And if you care so much about this conflict, you should be willing to play a more direct and a more substantial way in funding this war yourself, I think the president and I certainly think that America, we’re done with the funding of the Ukraine war business.
“Americans, I think, are sick of continuing to send their money, their tax dollars, to this particular conflict. But if the Europeans want to step up and actually buy the weapons from American producers, we’re OK with that. But we’re not going to fund it ourselves anymore,” he added.
As Trump prepares to meet Putin in Alaska to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine, the US president has suggested a deal would involve Kyiv conceding territory.

Ukraine’s only hope is to get rid of Zelensky !
JD gets high scores from me except on Ukraine. Where he is a untutored dunce, and is Trump’s attack chihuahua dog on Zelensky.
Why are you posting such old news?
This was hashed out @ the NATO Summit: The Euros are going to 5% of GDP for defense*; they’ll buy the weapons. Additionally, in the EU negotiations, Europe gets a nice energy deal from the USA.
I do think it’d be only fair if the Euros get the contracts to rebuild all of Russia’s distillation towers, after the Ukies take them out and Russia grinds to a halt.
*As I’ve stated before, IMO this is, if sustained, in the long run a very dangerous level of defense funding for Europe. I also don’t think all the Euro countries will get there without follow up energy deals with the USA, and (obviously) the US President pushing such, and our own production. So, if you don’t want the Euro’s to arm up, at least in the short term, then you should oppose Trump and try to get him tossed out, right?.
You are jousting with isolationist- libertarians. These kindergarteners think you don’t need allies and friends in this world. >>>>>> Even as they cheer on the Russian led (they love Putin and Russia) BRICs alliance.
Zman should have paid heed to this meme ! I
This will embolden Russia to turn its man-bear-pig snout up to any cease fire deal, thereby diminishing American, European and Ukrainian leverage to force a settlement. JD Vance needs to read Art of the Deal.
I suspect JD was pushing back on Zelensky’s statement.
I don’t like what either of them said but I have faith in Trump.
Thanks, i’ ll let Presiden5 Trump do the work.
Same here, with regard to faith in Trump. Actually, JD’s statement was much more nuanced now that I read past the headline to what he actually said.
Quite right. He won’t stop at Ukraine, either.
Yeah, how's it doing?
Maybe I’ve become too jaded, but I don’t think the US has any genuine friends in the world. Your point of view seems to want the US to continue to be the gravy train for the rest of the world. There is a deep and abiding sentiment among great swaths of the American people who are saying enough. When does the gravy train end? When we are 40 trillion in debt? 50 trillion? Never? Oh yes, we have plenty of hangers on, but no genuine friends.
Um, the Vance interview aired TODAY on Fox News.
You are correct!
There were no Ukrainians.
“Washington is “done with the funding” of Ukraine’s war against Russia, JD Vance, the US vice-president, has said”
Hallelujah!
Why not! I still don't know what the critical U.S. interest in Ukraine is.
Cannot??? See who?
See = Sez
