NEW DELHI, Aug 8 (Reuters) - New Delhi has put on hold its plans to procure new U.S. weapons and aircraft, according to three Indian officials familiar with the matter, in India's first concrete sign of discontent after tariffs imposed on its exports by President Donald Trump dragged ties to their lowest level in decades.
India had been planning to send Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Washington in the coming weeks for an announcement on some of the purchases, but that trip has been cancelled, two of the people said.
Trump on Aug. 6 imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods as punishment for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, which he said meant the country was funding Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That raised the total duty on Indian exports to 50% - among the highest of any U.S. trading partner.
The president has a history of rapidly reversing himself on tariffs and India has said it remains actively engaged in discussions with Washington. One of the people said the defence purchases could go ahead once India had clarity on tariffs and the direction of bilateral ties, but "just not as soon as they were expected to."
Written instructions had not been given to pause the purchases, another official said, indicating that Delhi had the option to quickly reverse course, though there was "no forward movement at least for now."
Post publication of this story, India’s government issued a statement it attributed to a Ministry of Defence source describing news reports of a pause in the talks as "false and fabricated." The statement also said procurement was progressing as per "extant procedures."
Delhi, which has forged a close partnership with America in recent years, has said it is being unfairly targeted

India will change their minds when Pakistan inevitably attacks again.
It would appear the story is BS put out by the Trump hating a-holes at Reuters.
Put additional F1/CPT/OPT/H1B/H4 workers ‘on hold.’
‘Hold’ their remittances.
Inevitable - and it is all unecessary
Russian or Chinese military hasn’t proven to be all that good, away from their home territory.
USA has a very proven record and our military arms prove that we can reach world wide.
Russia has lost a generation of it’s young men.
China now faces America, Japan, and a very resolute Powerhouse, South Korea.
Who Y’all going to bet on?
Small price to pay.
IMHO: the US envoy is in Russia right now in the hopes of making progress on a peace deal / or at least begin moving in that direction.
Trump is playing the: sugar and whip game.
He is attempting to create leverage wherever he can may it be pushing on the sanctions even harder, announcing US nuclear armed (Boomer) subs off the shore of Russia, threatening to arm Ukraine even more if a peace isn’t worked out / Russia doesn’t cooperate.
India is part of the whip.
Sadly, we try to sell arms there, and we have been trying to court India for many years (they are part of a greater US India / China strategy). Pushing on India like this threatens to unravel the advances made in the past.
We have been fighting diaper-heads that basically play “hide and go seek” and try to shoot you in the back.
You should read some of the reports by US vets the volunteered to go fight in Ukraine, or look at the body-count of vets that are volunteering to fight in the Ukrainian foreign legion.
Good! Now kick the H-1B Visa holders out of our country. Do it very unceremoniously with a swift kick to their @55.
What will happen when AI takes away a lot of these Indians’ jobs?
And they pledged to hold their breath til they turned blue.
“ It would appear the story is BS put out by the Trump hating a-holes at Reuters.”
Makes sense.
And it is Occam’s Razor.
They’d only make them smell like curried goat crap and then crash them into slums.
India ( as is the world) is starting to wise up. Sanctions, stealing sovereign funds, weaponizing the dollar, ordering nations to use the dollar, “ do as we say” is no longer working.
Thanks to Trump’s tariff aggression:
1. India and a far worse communist China are becoming friends.
2. American consumers are getting taxed on their foreign purchases to support Ukraine in a war that we should be stating out of.
If the recent war was any indication they did very well with natively developed weapons, especially their equivalent of the iron dome, "Akashter" or whatever it's called. Also the 'Brahmos' missile that have customers lining up to buy.
Ending this war would be a lot easier if Russia was getting the worst of it on the battlefield. We could ensure that quickly by sending our well-equipped troops.
Yeah? You really want to express your discontent, ,India? Close all the 7-11s and gas stations in America. Am I right, Joe Biden ? Up high!
