ICE is pressuring people in custody to ‘self-deport’; many are giving up

“I held your case over from this morning because you wanted to just take a removal order,” Grande said, a hint of confusion in his voice. “Is that still the case?”

“Yes,” the man responded in Spanish.

According to Grande, the man had entered the United States in August 2023 using CBP One — a phone application created by the Biden administration that asked asylum seekers to wait for lottery-style appointments to come to ports of entry to request protection — and had a pending asylum application in which he claimed a fear of return to Mexico.

Still, he wanted to give up and leave.

The man’s decision was not an isolated case. Crystal Felix, an immigration attorney and the legal representative of the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium, said that many are giving up legitimate asylum claims because conditions for immigrants in the U.S. have grown so dire. She said policies including arrests at immigration courts, and the government’s push to keep as many people as possible in immigration custody, make asylum seekers and other immigrants who might qualify to stay feel too hopeless to try.

“There’s just a lot of desperation,” Felix said.

Several people that day in early July asked Grande to deport them. A week later in the same courtroom, Capital & Main saw at least eight more say they also wanted to give up their cases to stay in the U.S. Many had entered using the CBP One app, and at least one was among those recently arrested in immigration court hallways.

According to current and former detainees, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are pressuring people in its custody to agree to deportation.

“The officers make people afraid and stressed by telling them that they’ll be in there for a year,” a man who was recently released from Otay Mesa Detention Center said in Spanish.

He noted that conditions inside the facility are enough to make anyone want to give up. He and other immigrants in this article are not being identified due to retaliation concerns...

Support Times of San Diego

It has non-profit status?!

Times of San Diego is part of NEWSWELL, a fiscally sponsored project and pre-approved grantee of the Arizona State University Foundation for A New American University, a tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the “ASU Foundation”).

Paging the IRS!

This is why ICE likes its raids to make a big splash of publicity. I promise you that this is heavily covered in the Spanish media and TV here. You will not see these raids on TV but so called migrants will. Leading to millions of self deportations. They know they should not be here so they GTFO!

Get them doggies rolling!

Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’
Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’

Keep movin’, movin’, movin’
Though they’re disapprovin’
Keep them dogies* movin’
Rawhide!
Don’t try to understand ‘em
Just rope and throw and brand ‘em
Soon we’ll be living high and wide.
My heart’s calculatin’
My true love will be waitin’
Be waiting at the end of my ride.

Move ‘em on, head ‘em up
Head ‘em up, move ‘em on
Move ‘em on, head ‘em up
Rawhide!
Cut ‘em out, ride ‘em in
Ride ‘em in, let ‘em out
Cut ‘em out, ride ‘em in
Rawhide!

Rawhide!

Oh, no! They can't self-deport. They have to vote for Hillary, they have to be counted for HRCs gerrymandered district!

Dems all cry 'Noo......'

A Judge has to tell them to come back!!

Traveling out west last week we saw several Hispanic families with all of their possessions tied down in their truck heading south.

It was great to see.

Bye.

I wish the BP would force them to take their trash with them. They made a mess with their cowardly stampede to America. We don’t want all the crap they left along the trail. Take your crap home!

GOING HOME IS NOT “GIVING UP”. The miggies love to tell us how much they love their families. They need to go home and be with their families.

“...fear of return to Mexico...”

Sort of like fear of return to Canada.

What a freaking joke. So now the USA is responsible for all Mexicans who just say they are afraid of their own shadow. And of course, they are ALWAYS criminal welfare types. Something we need more of, NOT!

Send them back in a wheel barrow after their kneecaps are broken. /spit

Don’t remember a time in the last 50 years being a news junkie where our tax dollars finally were used to benefit this nation on domestic soil.

“Felix said people held in ICE custody are facing impossible decisions. She said one client had already spent a year and a half in the U.S., had a pending asylum application with a strong case and was working to send money to his family so they could stay safe while he went through the asylum process when ICE detained him. “

Initial ORR Benefits

Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA)
Counting from their date of eligibility, individuals may receive RCA to help meet their most basic needs, such as food, shelter, and transportation. (Individuals with an ORR eligibility date on or after May 5, 2025, are eligible for four months of RCA.)

ORR Matching Grant (MG) Program
Some may participate in the MG Program, an early self-sufficiency initiative. Enrollment slots are limited in number and by location. The MG Program provides cash assistance, intensive case management, and employment services to help clients immediately find and maintain employment. The goal of the program is to assist clients to become economically self-sufficient within 240 days. Asylees should enroll in the MG Program as soon as possible after eligibility.

Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA)
Those not eligible for Medicaid may receive RMA from their date of eligibility. (Individuals with an ORR eligibility date on or after May 5, 2025, are eligible for four months of RMA.) RMA provides the same health insurance coverage as Medicaid.

Domestic Medical Screening
From their date of eligibility, asylees may be eligible for a domestic medical screening examination funded by ORR. The screening supports client resettlement by identifying health conditions that threaten their well-being, providing vaccinations required for school and work, and referring them to primary care providers or specialists for ongoing health care. ORR recommends that medical screenings are completed soon after arrival in the U.S.

Times 10 + million illegal aliens fraudulently enrolled in our asylum system

Anyone else see a problem with this?

It kind of galls you to have to pay these dirt bag invaders $1000 and a free airline ticket home when we have already gave so many of them multiple free airline tickets and tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars to enable them to send a large fraction of it to their families in their home countries as remittances but it's a relative bargain

FWIW, a lot of these fraudsters are simply trying to get out of jail and head home so they can get another fake ID and sneak back into the US.

Is there a tariff on self-deporting? There should be some kind of tax on all income made in this country, and a tax on any money sent out of the country while the person has been here illegally. Those IRS debt-forgiveness guys could use the business, after all.

Recent Justice Department statistics indicate that less than 15% of those seeking asylum were granted it in fiscal years 2022 and 2023.

Odds are not in their favor - take the free airfare & $1,000 cash & leave. If you are afraid to go to your home country, I suspect they could get a free flight to another country.

International trade depends on the ability to move money all over the world at will. A tax on money moving out of the country is just not a real possibility.

If Western Union transfers are taxed, some other method will develop.
