Trump says he’s ordered nuclear submarines repositioned after Russian official’s ‘highly provocative’ remarks

President Donald Trump issued a rare threat of nuclear escalation on Friday, saying he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be strategically positioned near Russia in response to what he said were aggressive remarks by Dmitry Medvedev, the country’s former president and current deputy chairman of its Security Council.

“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump said in a Truth Social post.

Addressing the matter later with reporters, he said the move was an effort to be “prepared.”

“He was talking about nuclear,” Trump said. “When you talk about nuclear, we have to be prepared, and we’re totally prepared.”

It was not immediately clear if Trump was referring to subs with nuclear weapon capabilities, or merely nuclear powered subs. The Pentagon keeps movements of its nuclear capabilities closely held, making it nearly impossible to confirm Trump’s announcement.

But his statement nonetheless made for a striking rhetorical confrontation that evoked some of the nuclear saber rattling that colored the Cold War.

Trump later Friday said the repositioned nuclear submarines were moved “closer to Russia.”

“We always want to be ready, and so I have sent to the region two nuclear submarines. I just want to make sure that his words are only words and nothing more than that,” Trump said in an interview with Newsmax.

Medvedev, who has been sparring with Trump online for the past several days, on Thursday had made reference to Russia’s Soviet-era automatic, retaliatory nuclear strike capabilities, after Trump told Medvedev to “watch his words.”

During the Cold War my Dad was a designated shelter manager. As a family we went to drills 2 or 3 times a year with other shelter managers. Sometimes they were too realistic with mock incidents. Even locked up for a few days with presentations and discussions of what could go on outside and the aftermath was more than some participants could handle. My parents held just about nothing from us. Sometimes I wish I knew less.

We have very few shelters now if amy. I have not seen a single sign of one in years. We think we grew out of such madness to create such a threat. In their paranoia, Russia never did. They do think they can survive the first shot. We don’t even consider it. We live in ignorant bliss and denial. So long as these weapons exist there is constant real threat some nut will use them or cause an accident that snowballs.

Numbers.

The warhead counts for both sides generally should not and does not include tactical warheads which have much lower yield than strategic. The numbers of 5000 Plus include tactical. The numbers of down under 2,000 for both sides talking strategic with high yield, and Russia has an advantage of several hundred.

Probably the most important reality for considering strategic nuclear war is the geography of the situation. A Russian Boomer off the Maryland Coast has a missile flight time of under 10 minutes to the Pentagon. An American Boomer placed as close as you can place it to Moscow is 5 or 6 times farther away.

This is warning time. If there are anti-missile missiles out there it’s more time to hit the incoming warhead. The Russians have a huge advantage in this matter. An American submarine that can be anywhere and hit Moscow is not that big a deal. It means the warhead is enroute longer providing much more warning.

This geography is a powerful thing. You cannot get closer to St Petersburg or Moscow then the Gulf of Finland or the Baltic Sea. I am not aware of the depths or how much traffic there is in Russian attack submarines in that area. Then the problem multiplies trying to hit Russian icbms deep into their interior, much much farther away. And they are also mobile and can start that truck running down the road as soon as they have warning of incoming warhead. The warhead doesn’t chase them. The warhead is aimed where they were before they started running. They will escape the blast radius.

Our silos do not do that. And it’s a much shorter distance from our coasts to our silos than it is to the Russian icbms from any Coast.

Russia does not make noises suggesting they are afraid of American weaponry and technology, and as you can see above, for good reason.

Oh come on! Go kick that hornet’s nest and die for your country!!! We can’t sit on all those 5,000 nucs forever. We need to break the seals and use them or lose them! This is about freedom! Forget all that nonsense about taking the high ground and avoiding escalation. Get with the program man! Let those Russkies know you mean business and you can talk smack just as well as they can! Start a thermonuclear war just because you can. It never was about Ukraine. It is all about Freedom doncha know?

/s I feel I need to add that so as not to be mistaken for others who suggest nearly the same but in all seriousness.

Somebody needs to find Trump something new to do, some new harmless obsession. He seems to be tired of golf. I don’t think building the Big Beautiful Ballroom is going to keep him occupied enough or for very long and will end up like the Big Beautiful Bill as a declared victory left behind as a dim memory.

I have a gun to use when I need it but I don’t talk about it very often at all. I don’t need to. I also keep it and myself ready but I don’t advertise that either.

“Global thermonuclear war? Total head up ass are you?”

I think you may have miss read the thread just a bit....
The question was ..

“what principles are you willing to die for?”

My answer ..
Hey ... I’m ready to rumble ...
God and country
Faith and freedom, friends and family

I haven’t made any comment about what I think the response to a tack nuke in Kiev should be. My opinion really is moot as I don’t make the calls.

I’m asking what the response would be and why.

I think that is a valid question considering the events unfolding.

Don’t you ?

Trump is suffering from White House Fever. He needs to get out of the house and explore federal offices - just barge in - for example:

Motor on down to Hampton Roads, VA and military installations thereabouts - just barge in. People would like to see him. He will be glad that he met them.

“We have very few shelters now “

Interesting post... I remember the civil defense shelters also. Under public buildings, stocked to the hilt with boxes full of cans. Water, blankets, med supplies.
I suppose that all ended up at the surplus store sold off to preppers and conspiracy folks.

I have no plans to survive a nuclear holocaust, but a limited amount of civil unrest ... I can weather.

What do you see happening if we get in to the twilight zone?
What will the west do. How does it unfold ?
One tack nuke .... then the balls in our court.

Posts like yours are what has degraded the FR forum.

If you have nothing to say .... why say it?

I told you, you have miss read the thread ... and yet your comprehension still lags.
IF you wouldn't say it to my face standing on my porch ..
you shouldn't say it on the net.

I understand there are people who just like to troll, and a little of that can add some spice and action to the topics.
But you don't know me from the man in the moon.

And yet you tell me I have my head up my ass?
That tells me a lot about you.
More then I care to know.

Learn to read.

Now ... tell me how you see it unfolding if Putin pops a tack nuke on Kiev.
What happens next?

"The Russians relish endless war."

I find it more believable that the Russians crave military security after Russia's nightmarish invasions by Napoleon and Hitler. And part of that security is having Ukraine not become a nuclear power, and not commit genocide against ethnic Russians within its own borders.

“Russians crave military security “

I suppose you have read through this thread, have you noticed my question?
How do you think the west will respond if Putin pops a tack nuke in Kiev?

It seems no one wants to confront that possibility.

How about you?

Secretary of State Marco Rubio with Brian Kilmeade of Fox Radio [July 31, 2025]

EXCERPTS [Sec'y Rubio]:

[The] President has waited over six months now and given the best efforts possible. We continue to engage with the Russian side – not with Putin but with some of Putin’s top people – in hopes of arriving at some understanding on a path forward that would lead to peace, and we’ve not seen any progress on that.

[W]hat bothers the President the most is he has these great phone calls where everyone sort of claims yeah, we’d like to see this end, if we could find a way forward, and then he turns on the news and another city has been bombed, including those far from the frontlines. So at some point, he’s got to make a decision here – how much to continue to engage in an effort to do ceasefires if one of the two sides is not interested in one

[Medvedev is] not a decision maker. He’s not in any of the meetings or conversations we’ve ever had.

I’m not sure he’s speaking for the official Russian position, but he’s certainly someone in an official position in Russia who’s saying things that are inflammatory.

That’s why the proper response to the other guy sabre rattling about nukes is to remind them we have them too and assure them we are ready to use them if necessary. Otherwise MAD doesn’t work.
