Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said early Friday he is “disappointed” by President Trump’s decision to increase tariffs on his country to 35 percent but left open the door for a potential trade deal.
After weeks of negotiations with America’s northern neighbor, Trump decided to ratchet up levies on the country alongside sweeping new tariffs announced Thursday.
The president again cited what he claimed was a “flood” of fentanyl from the northern border, a statement not supported by data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Carney’s efforts to recognize a Palestinian state also jeopardized talks, Trump said late Wednesday.
In his statement, Carney said Canada accounted for only 1 percent of fentanyl coming into the U.S. and that the country “has been working intensively to further reduce these volumes.”
“Canada’s government is making historic investments in border security to arrest drug traffickers, take down transnational gangs, and end migrant smuggling,” he wrote. “These include thousands of new law enforcement and border security officers, aerial surveillance, intelligence and security operations, and the strongest border legislation in our history.”
Trump’s updated tariff rate does not impact goods that are primarily manufactured in Canada, one of the provisions of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement negotiated during his first term. Carney said that carve-out would keep the country’s overall tariff rate low, among the lowest of all its foreign trading partners.
However, the Canadian prime minister said other sectors of the economy, including lumber, steel, aluminum and cars, would be significantly impacted, and that his government would explore protective measures.

How does one get the name Carney? I suppose is forebears were carnival barkers? After all, he is little more than one of those.
“The Canadian government will act”
South Park incoming!
Eff 'em.
This one has to do with Israel running US foreign policy simply recognizing Palestinian statehood isn’t a reason to call off trade negotiations. Canada will eventually fold though.
Canada has been taking us for $200 Billion a year. They are going to play ball and lower that substantially. We don’t need what they sell, they need us. 40mm people against 347mm.
Canadian Kevin O’Leary says Canada will fold and make a deal.
Instead of negotiating, the Canadians have been going around acting like they had the upper hand and refusing to negotiate, all the time criticizing President Trump.
Well, how did that work out for you?
Hate Jews much?
“This one has to do with Israel running US foreign policy simply recognizing Palestinian statehood isn’t a reason to call off trade negotiations. Canada will eventually fold though.”
This is about a $200 Billion a year trade imbalance and we don’t even really need what they sell. Your last sentence is correct. Canandian Kevin O’Leary says Canada is doomed without a deal.
“Mr. President, why are you placing these new tariffs on Canada? What are you, some kind of dictator from the Middle East?”
Well, how did that work out for you?
Trump can say that he's ready to negotiate when the Canadians decide to replace Carney. That may be the case.
Israel has been pretty much allowed to do whatever they want and all Trump says is its not helpful pretty obvious he lets BiBi do whatever he wants that is not rocket science
Make them abolish the dairy tariff as a show of good faith.
Yes, it is plain to see. Thanks.
Walk softly, but carry a big tariff stick.
A trade imbalance does not mean one country is taking advantage of another.
What really is a “Palestinian”? What 1000s of year culture is there of Palestinians? What ancient leader did the Palestinians have? They’re just a bunch of Arab nomadic tribes.
No, Canadahas been insolent enough tous all by themselves. Ramp up the pain.
He’s disappointed that President Trump is holding his feet to the fire.
Neither Canada nor Mexico act like they appreciate the US. Like the Democrats and Globohomos their actions aim to undermine our Republic and our sovereignty.
Screw both of them until they change their performance.
