Donald Trump’s administration has denied permission for Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te to stop in New York en route to Central America, after China raised objections with Washington about the visit.
Lai planned to transit the US in August en route to Paraguay, Guatemala and Belize, which recognise Taiwan as a country. But the US told Lai he could not visit New York on the way, according to three people familiar with the decision.

The White House’s decision will deepen concerns among Taiwan’s supporters in Washington that Trump is taking a softer stance on China as he pushes to hold a summit with President Xi Jinping.
The Financial Times reported on Monday that the US commerce department had been told to freeze planned tough export controls against China as the countries hold trade talks and discuss a summit.
China objects to Taiwanese leaders visiting the US, which does not have official diplomatic relations with Taipei.

I’m surprised to hear this. I hope it’s only done on a temporary or an ‘as needed’ basis, vs all the time.
Trump has several irons in the fire that China is a part of, this may not be about Taiwan, bur more about Russia, for the moment.
This may be forgotten in a year or so.
Why would he visit New York instead of the White House?
That was stupid! The PRC will not be impressed. The barbarian round eye is showing proper deference to the Middle Kingdom.
Maybe he would have been coming as a tourist, vs for an official diplomatic visit.
With Russia, Trump is acting like he’s the world’s policeman to help the Ukraine.
Why isn’t he doing the same to help Taiwan?
I'm not sure if Taiwan is an ally...or just not an enemy.
We're starting to get more chips made here....as it should be.
It’s probably RINO Susie Wiles’s influence.

“But the US told Lai he could not visit New York on the way, according to three people familiar with the decision.”
I never believe it unless they are at least five unnamed people familiar with the decision.
Taiwan is our ally but this is a pretty small gesture. I expect Trump will balance it out on some less visible and more meaningful front.
Making excuses.
Our policy has long been to allow this, so backtracking now for the CCP is troubling.
The U.S. has never formally recognized Taiwan as an independent country.
Correct translation is "Center Kingdom."
If this is a result of Wiles influence, it may be better for our country if Ms Wiles decides to spend more time with her family. Whatever Wiles has to suggest on this prickly kind of issue, Trump should also run it by Vice President Vance, who may be less ‘compromised’ than Ms Wiles.
Seems like questionable sources to me.
edwinland-the folks here too often don’t have a clue. Does the Taiwan president really have to stop in NY? These are small countries, no threat to the US economy. Shouldn’t we encourage it? Ok so they don’t land at JFK. These countries recognize Taiwan-that’s enough.
Something tells me there’s more than enough land in South America for half of the 20 million Taiwanese that may have to move. That plus a few million South Africans starting with white farmers. The go-to guy will be Marco.
Correct.
And?
