Ukraine must get ready for future in which there is no ceasefire with Russia
The Guardian ^ | Sun 13 Jul 2025 | Dan Sabbagh

While Donald Trump – and other western leaders – are taking their time to catch up with reality, it is obvious that Vladimir Putin has no apparent desire to halt the war in Ukraine. A realistic future military and diplomatic strategy for Kyiv has to accept that fact – and formulate a new approach.

The past six months have been dominated by the erroneous assumption that it would be possible for Trump to negotiate a ceasefire, even an armistice. That would be followed by the arrival of an Anglo-French led stabilisation force to secure the future of Ukraine. But Putin has shown no desire to stop attacking.

A fresh Russian ground offensive is emerging towards Velykyi Burluk, 50 miles east of Kharkiv, and for now is making some rare gains: three miles in 10 days. More significantly, the cynical bombing of Ukraine’s cities by missile and drone is only intensifying, straining Kyiv’s air defences and leading to more civilian casualties.

A record 728 Shahed drones and 13 missiles were launched on the night of 8 July and the next morning, many at Lutsk in the west, though the bombardment of 597 drones and 26 missiles on Friday night and Saturday morning showed no slackening of violent intent. It will be soon possible for Russia to attack with 1,000 drones in a night, Ukraine believes.

In a paper written last month, Andriy Zagorodnyuk, a former Ukrainian defence minister, said “an acceptable armistice may never formally arrive” and that Kyiv should formulate “a revised theory of victory” – which accepts that the Kremlin considers itself engaged in a forever war against its smaller neighbour.

The former minister describes the new approach as “strategic neutralisation”, a permanent and dynamic military effort to ensure that Russia’s forces cannot advance...

That is what you do in War, you go after territory and the other nations capital to force an ending. Do you study any of this?

By your logic then there was no reason to take Berlin in 1945.

3 miles in 10 days is a snail pace.

Galicia and Volhynia should return to Poland, or Austria if Poland doesn’t want them.

There is the little matter of Slovakia being in the way of the latter proposal.

Don’t forget the west overthrew the elected President of Ukraine in 2014

LOL, yes it was the "west" that mind controlled the Ukrainian people into tossing out a president who went back on his promise to have Ukraine join the EU.

Who in his right mind would want to join some poor Russian-BananaStan(CIS) economic group, vs the much wealthier EU?

They no longer have much of a ground army and without one they cannot stop the Russians. To finish any war a ground army has to be involved, so where are they going to get one? They can’t find any conscripts left to fight.

No amount of Air Power can ever win a war on its own, if so should we then not have won in Vietnam or Korea? We haven’t really won any kind of major war since W.W. II and the first Gulf War was a joke as was the 2nd one.

That little pause in arms deliveries was probably just to get the Euros to pay their share of the bill.

Now that they have, and Putin refused the deal he was offered, it is major announcement time tomorrow.

Bone-Crushing Sanctions will end the war before the mid-term elections. Nothing sells better than Victory.

You really don’t know much of the history or how to read the geopolitics of the region.

Read this, still the best explanation of the Ukraine situation:

Right, so Putin from day one trying to seize Ukraines capitol, means therefor, in your words "Russia has no real interest in taking over all of Ukraine". Okay

In 2021 Putin published "On the historical unity of Russia and Ukraine". 7000 rambling words about how Ukraine shouldn't exist.

Its on the official russian government website.

Odessa is a very strategically located Russian city and Russia will try very hard to take it back. They are very likely to succeed.

It's on the other side of the Dnieper River. In this war, the Russians cannot supply their troops past the Dnieper River.

Especially with the widespread use of drones and satellites. A pontoon bridge is not going to last a minute.

It was easier to build one in a past conflict - such as WWII because the enemy cannot see you building a bridge and of course there were no drones back then.

Quite astute of Trump to do that.

Russia bought the Crimea in 1745 so it was theirs anyway.

And Estonia was conquered by Russia in 1710. So what? Europe's borders were constantly changing.

It's a proxy war that the U.S. is fighting with Russia, just like we fought proxy wars with Russia and China in Vietnam and Korea. There are no clear victories in proxy wars. The only ones who win are the individuals who have investments in the military industrial complex. Unlike you, I do care where my tax dollars are going, along with my tax dollars that have paid for weapons Ukraine has received. We still haven't gotten an inventory of where billions of our tax dollars have gone in Ukraine. Zelensky claims that money was not a loan.

After WWI, the Dawes Plan, signed in 1924, allowed American banks to lend billions of dollars to Germany to help it make reparations payments and stimulate economic growth. Germany also borrowed money from France and Great Britain. Then came Hitler and WWII. Those loans were never fully repaid, and it took Germany almost 100 years to pay off their WWI reparations. As usual, American taxpayers not only took it in the ass financially, but literally died saving Europe once more.

and had previously turned over all its nukes, long range missiles and long range bombers to Russia.

You keep repeating the same nonsense talking points.

Ukraine was made non-neutral by the Maidan Coup - thanks to folks Victoria Nuland and Barack Obama.

Ukraine's so-called "nukes" were inoperable. They were Soviet-era weapons, controlled by the Russians. They were turned over to the United States and Russia. The USA pressed for it, as they did not want the corrupt and unstable Ukraine government selling them off to bad actors.

“”””There is no ambition for a new USSR.””””

That sounded better before Russia launched the biggest European War since WWII by invading to conquer their neighbor as year 4 of that invasion is approaching and Russia has called in their past battlefield partners, the North Korean Army, to help.

Surrender is a viable option

Historically, it’s unlikely that Russia or Vlad the invader will surrender….
Same with Ukraine

LOL, Berlin was the end of the war and after Germany and Russia launched their invasions causing WWII and it took years and millions of lives to get there, it was the finish, not a sneak attack on a peaceful nation.

The attack on Kiev was a sneak attack to conquer a nation at peace, it was the launch of an invasion with the goal of an easy win over the country.

Right, Ukraine held elections multiple times after the "coup" and surprise EVERY Ukrainian president supported joining the richer EU vs poor Russia.

Ukraine NEVER wanted to join Russia vs the EU.

They realize that they need our Patriot batteries. They can't manufacture their own.
