Ukraine must get ready for future in which there is no ceasefire with Russia
The Guardian ^ | Sun 13 Jul 2025 | Dan Sabbagh

While Donald Trump – and other western leaders – are taking their time to catch up with reality, it is obvious that Vladimir Putin has no apparent desire to halt the war in Ukraine. A realistic future military and diplomatic strategy for Kyiv has to accept that fact – and formulate a new approach.

The past six months have been dominated by the erroneous assumption that it would be possible for Trump to negotiate a ceasefire, even an armistice. That would be followed by the arrival of an Anglo-French led stabilisation force to secure the future of Ukraine. But Putin has shown no desire to stop attacking.

A fresh Russian ground offensive is emerging towards Velykyi Burluk, 50 miles east of Kharkiv, and for now is making some rare gains: three miles in 10 days. More significantly, the cynical bombing of Ukraine’s cities by missile and drone is only intensifying, straining Kyiv’s air defences and leading to more civilian casualties.

A record 728 Shahed drones and 13 missiles were launched on the night of 8 July and the next morning, many at Lutsk in the west, though the bombardment of 597 drones and 26 missiles on Friday night and Saturday morning showed no slackening of violent intent. It will be soon possible for Russia to attack with 1,000 drones in a night, Ukraine believes.

In a paper written last month, Andriy Zagorodnyuk, a former Ukrainian defence minister, said “an acceptable armistice may never formally arrive” and that Kyiv should formulate “a revised theory of victory” – which accepts that the Kremlin considers itself engaged in a forever war against its smaller neighbour.

The former minister describes the new approach as “strategic neutralisation”, a permanent and dynamic military effort to ensure that Russia’s forces cannot advance...

That was not in the terms of surrender. I doubt Putin wants anything beyond the Dnieper except perhaps Odessa which he might want as a bargaining chip.

Just what money making war mongers love, US involvement in unending proxy wars.

The end for Ukraine is coming. Russia is picking up the pace and taking more territory every day. They are about to cross the Dnieper River which is game over.

At that point they take Kiev and then in the south they take Odessa. The war then is essentially over. There is not much NATO or the U.S. can do unless they want to commit a huge land force to fight and neither have one to do so. Air power alone will not win.

Once Russia has taken the key cities and territory the war ends of their terms, same ones they have said all along. Ukraine will be a Neutral country, no NATO and Putin may then demand NATO leave the Eastern Block countries as part of the new security architecture they want. Poland will have to decided what they want then. And Finland and Sweden will be left trying to figure out what they joined NATO, which will have been for nothing.

An unending proxy war where our enemy Putin loses military equipment and russian soldiers because he refuses to stop invading Ukraine, while not one US soldier is injured or killed?

Ukraine needs to accept whatever terms Russia is demanding and end this war. And the US needs to get the hell out of it.

*****************

Ukraine will continue to resist as long as they get outside support and the war is fought in areas that don’t really matter to the Western puppet government in Kiev.

Eventually people in Ukraine will tire of the war and a ceasefire and negotiations will start.

Ukraine doesn’t have the power for any offensive maneuvers only defensive, playing defense won’t bring the Russians to “the table.”

They are about to cross the Dnieper River which is game over.

Not happening with drones and satellites.

Ukraine for a good bit of its history has had a relationship with Russia going back hundreds of years. Russia has no real interest in taking over all of Ukraine on the the provinces that are traditional Russian in nature and keeping the Crimea which they bought in 1745.

Yep, seems that Trump has agreed with Europe to turn Ukraine into, yet another, FOREVER WAR.

China has been selling off their treasuries for quite some time and has not been buying any more. They are no longer financing us as others in the world are.

Russia has said for the last 25 years - no NATO for Ukraine and certainly no foreign troops on Ukraine territory.

Ukraine WAS neutral in 2014 with a majority of its citizens against joining NATO, and had previously turned over all its nukes, long range missiles and long range bombers to Russia. The result:

Putin in 2014 seized Crimea and started a separatist war in Ukraine to "protect local Russians".

In 2022 Putin invaded Ukraine attempting to seize all of it.

Actually he doesn’t. Other than the Russian provinces, Putin has no desire to take over all of Ukraine ask it is made up of many ethnicities that Russia does not want to deal with. They want Ukraine as a a neutral country and a buffer between Russia and the West.

Russia has no real interest in taking over all of Ukraine

Right, which is why Putin sent a large part of his army toward Ukraines capitol trying to seize it. Okay

It’s already happening. Drones cannot and will not determine the outcome of the war.

Russia bought the Crimea in 1745 so it was theirs anyway.

Don’t forget the west overthrew the elected President of Ukraine in 2014, most all the mess going on there is your fault.

Ukraine is still in the fight and a lot of that is due to drones.

Odessa is a very strategically located Russian city and Russia will try very hard to take it back. They are very likely to succeed.
