911 service disruptions across Pa. linked to vendor connectivity problems: PEMA

Pennsylvania emergency call system is experiencing periodic disruptions on Friday because of problems with the state’s 911 connection vendor, according to the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA).

The issue was first noticed around 2 p.m. by the state’s Next Generation 911 provider, PEMA director Randy Padfield said at a Friday news conference.

“The system continues to have some intermittent connectivity issues at this point in time that they’re still trying to troubleshoot,” Padfield said, although as of recently “it seemed like a majority of the calls were being delivered.”

If callers can’t connect to 911, PEMA advises them to bypass the 911 routing system by calling their county’s emergency call center directly. A list of numbers that go directly to central Pennsylvania 911 call centers can be found here.

The Next Generation 911 system takes 911 calls from landlines and cell towers across the Commonwealth and routes them to the applicable county 911 center, along with location data and callback information.

Padfield said some of those calls are not being routed and others are being sent through without the necessary data.

A system update was recently completed, but Padfield said it is not believed to be the cause of the issues.

“We have procedures in place to be able to troubleshoot this and determine whether it’s a network issue, whether it’s a software or hardware issue, or whether it lies, sometimes, outside the network,” Padfield said.

Padfield did not say when he expected the problem to be fixed.

I got an emergency alert while driving so I couldn’t read it.

It did not stay on the phone. That’s a bad system. I couldn’t check it it after I stopped.

They sent me this stupid notice on my phone. A notice like that only works if the person getting the notice knows what the heck it is.

Both my and my son’s cell phone went off at the same time.

He came back and said, “So no 9-1-1 huh”?

I joked (as aways), “I don’t need 9-1-1. I have my 9 MM”!

But seriously, there’s a State Police Barracks 6 miles away, and I have their number for emergencies.

I have the regular number of my local PD on my cell.

If I’m out of town and my home security system indicates a breakin, it’s easier to call directly.
