Imposter uses AI to mimic Marco Rubio's voice, places calls to high-level officials

An imposter using AI to mimic Secretary of State Marco Rubio's voice has been sending voice as well as text messages to foreign as well as US officials in Rubio's style of speaking and writing.

US authorities do not know who the person is who has been linked to the instances of AI mimicry, according to The Washington Post, however, they believe that the imposter is trying to manipulate government officials “with the goal of gaining access to information or accounts," the outlet said, citing a cable sent to State Department employees from Rubio's office.

The imposter has “contacted at least five non-Department individuals, including three foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a U.S. member of Congress," the cable added, which was dated July 3. The incidents of impersonation started in mid-June, where the imposter used the display name of Marco.Rubio@state.gov to create a Signal account, however, that is not the correct email address for the Secretary of State.

It is probably someone in the deep-state looking to undermine Trump's policies.

This guy better hope he’s smarter than the NSA because he’s definitely going to have their full attention pulling this.

This is very serious. Someone can use the technology for disastrous purposes, to blackmail, to start wars.

I’m telling you, we will rue the day that AI was allowed. “Even the elect will be deceived”.

There’s a website where you can pick from a list of politicians (Trump, Biden, and Harris among others). Then type in what you want them to say.

You will get a realistic video of the person you picked saying exactly what you typed. I tried it. It’s so convincing that it’s scary.

I ran the site through a scam detector. It came back classified as “questionable”.
So I’m not including the site’s link here.

Does the NSA work for the American people? :)

I suspect, that the bigger “shock” (because of first impressions) . . . will be:

AI is likely to enable an ability to actually talk with at least 1 animal / mammal - having a real conversation.

Now just think about what AI could do to the ordinary person who can’t prove that they didn’t do it.

I'm beginning to think it's time to start considering two-factor authentication for communications now.

As with passwords, two-factor authentication protects because it requires two things: Something you know, but also something you have like a physical token.

AI bots might be able to guess the password (something you know) part, but they won't be able to replicate the physical token part (something you have) because only one of those would exist, and it would exist in your own pocket. That token is the key to proving you are who you say you are.

I've given thought to this, being a software developer by trade. Just exactly what this would look like, I don't know. But I'm open to suggestions and ideas.

Some organizations are using two-factor authentication already, but not with a physical token generator. When you log in to, say, the VA, you are sent a text message with a 5 or 6 character code. You have to type in the code before you can get into the website. (The code expires in a short time.) Physical token generator is old tech, not bad, just been around a long time. BofA employees are issued one.
