Ex-New Yorkers dish on why they moved to Florida for good: ‘People thought we were crazy’

Ex-New Yorkers who have fled to Florida say they have no regrets after ditching high taxes and crime for a sunnier, cheaper and safer lifestyle.

A relentless “escape from New York” has hammered the city as more than 125,000 residents left for Florida between 2018 and 2022 and took nearly $14 billion in income with them, according to a new study from the nonpartisan Citizens Budget Commission.

Alex Taub, cofounder of entertainment tech startup Goblintown, relocated to Miami with his wife and two young children from the Upper West Side of Manhattan in July 2020 during the lockdowns.

“People thought we were crazy when we were telling them this but it just started getting more and more bleak in New York,” Taub told The Post. “For the same price that we were paying [for a two-bedroom apartment] in New York, we were getting a five-bedroom, four-bathroom house with a pool and a backyard.”

The CBC’s report noted that wealthy New Yorkers have left in droves, with the approximately 26,000 people who moved from New York to Miami-Dade County holding a per-capita income of over $266,000.

Taub, a lifelong New Yorker who was active in the city’s tech scene, said he previously would have considered it “blasphemous” to leave, but has been won over by the work-life balance and lower taxes.

“A lot of friends have moved down here, a lot people in tech, a lot of people in business. The people who stayed are the people with kids,” Taub said. “I’ve never worked harder in my life but I know that at 5 o’clock today I can jump in the pool for a short break with my kids and have fun,” he added.

Just don’t bring your liberal voting patterns with you or you’ll turn Florida into the same Hellhole that New York is.

For eight months a year Florida is a damn sauna. I hate heat and humidity. Were it not for that I’d be in Florida,Georgia or North Carolina right now.

We had the same thing happen in Oregon in the 60's and 70's. They voted for the same taxes, for soft on crime, and for destructive social programs to the point we now have a super majority of morons in our legislature,

Summer and early fall hurricane season and suffocating heat excepted.

That’s why Trump escapes to NYC in the summer.

It was relocated New Yorkers that ruined California to begin with. I was there and watched it happen.

Don’t bring those vile, nasty New York habits with you, or Florida will turn in to New York South. We have enough problems with Miami already.

I’m an old guy who moved to north Florida from Connecticut with my late wife and two small sons back in 1974. Given a choice, I far prefer living in the heat, rather than the cold. I live on a nice golf course on an acre and have a pool in my backyard. I can’t play golf anymore, but enjoy sitting out on my enclosed porch watching the golfers go by. It’s pretty hot here from May thru September, but the A/C makes the house quite comfortable. The rest of the year is nice. And I have a second home down on the coast, where it’s somewhat cooler.

I left communist New Jersey for Florida in February and I’m glad I did. People told me I was crazy because of the heat and humidity, but I’m too affected by NJ winters and grey skies. I want warmth, sunshine, palm trees, and being around politically like minded people. And less restrictive firearms laws.

Yeah, but not as bad as FL.

I don't understand why people don't move out to CA where it's dry moderate weather.

The only thing that is immoderate is the crazy Leftist political climate which you have also in NY but not so much in FL. Pick your poison I guess.

i’m 100% with you on that: i moved out of the NC piedmont area to escape the humidity ... btw, the Appalachian mountain areas and foothills in eastern seaboard states have delightfully moderate climates ...

Weather is great. Utility costs are very expensive. And property taxes and state income taxes. Don't come to California unless you can afford the high costs. Gasoline is inching towards $6/gallon and likely to go to $8/gallon soon because liberals are shutting down the refineries here. Water bills and electricity bills are very high. Housing is expensive. Traffic is a nightmare. Plenty of reasons not to come to California. I wish all the liberal east coast politicians here would leave, because they ruined California.

Many migrant New Yorkers feel the same way. In Florida, they're called half-backs... they come down to FL, experience the joys, but then get hammered by the humidity, and they move halfway back, mostly to (no-tax) TENN, and some to the Carolinas (mostly western NC). Mountains don't get humidity like that!

Beginning in 2021, FL GOP registrations topped democrat registrations.

In 2025 there are 1.3 million more registered pubbies than rats.
