Elon Musk vows to start a new political party after Trump feud
CBS News ^ | 7/4/2025 | Joe Walsh

As billionaire Elon Musk feuds with President Trump over his signature tax and domestic policy legislation, Musk has reupped his calls to launch a new political party — a daunting task even for the wealthiest person on Earth.

Musk first floated launching a third party, dubbed the "America Party," earlier this month, part of a nasty back-and-forth between the president and the Tesla CEO that marked the likely end of their political alliance. Musk raised the idea again this week as lawmakers raced to send the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to Mr. Trump's desk — and this time, Musk put a time limit on the plan.

"If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day," Musk wrote in a post on X Monday evening, before the bill narrowly passed the Senate on Tuesday and the House on Thursday. "Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE."

Musk polled his X followers about the idea of launching a third party on Friday, hours before Mr. Trump planned to sign the bill into law at a White House Fourth of July event.

"Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!" Musk wrote.

Musk's beef with the tax bill is exactly the same as critiques coming from the Libertarian Party and libertarian-leaning members of Congress like Massie and Paul (i.e. compromises on spending cuts, raises the deficit, etc).

That being the case, what can Musk's proposed new third party possibly bring to the table that we don't already have? Musk could just throw his support to the Libertarian Party and hope that his wealth can push it from fractions of a percentage point in most general elections to a couple of percentage points, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

I thought he was going to get out of politics because the Nazicrats destroyed Tesla.

Musk doesnt have the support needed to pull this off. And it is not like Republicans don’t want to cut spending, we just don’t have the votes to do it!

We all understand his anger towards yet more spending but as was learned over the last 50 years the Libertarian Party simply ends up electing Rats as they siphon off the win margin from Republican candidates.

The current Republican party doesn’t look at all like Daddy Bush’s gang of outsourcers and middle east meddlers. That’s cuz Trump took over the party and made it a fusion party: populists, anti-globalist, citizenist. If he had tried to just start his own party, woulda been a richer version of Harold Stassen.

Gong nowhere...While Musk has a following...it's because of his products and not his politics.

The score right now is....77 million to "0".

Elon only really had to deal with Trump and the motivated employees of DOGE.

He may be in for a terrible surprise with trying to start a _political party!_

I'd say he's smarter and wealthier than H. Ross Perot, and is backing his mouth with his wallet. MAGA has too many RINOs, and Musk could but the coffin nails in the Rat party. That would be a good thing, and might result in real debate on national problems.

Ross Perot 2.0

Only unlike Perot, Musk is not US born and so isn't eligible to run for President.

I hope Musk doesn’t pull it off with the same results as Ross Perot in electing Bill Clinton in 1992.

The party duopoly is too far intrenched in our political system and the only viable option is for there to be just the Trump-GOP.

FWIW, I've been following the Musk new-party story. I've not seen anything concrete in the way of a platform. Yes, I agree with Mr. Musk that the current fiscal situation is unsustainable. Yes, I agree there is considerable fat in the recently passed OBBB. (That last is an understatement.)

What is glaringly absent is the recognition of political reality. The Senate rules that severely limited what could pass both houses, for example. No observation that US Code Title 26, to be specific, is a bloated mess and needs to be trimmed severely.

The country's electorate is a highly splintered mess right now. Yes, Mr. Trump received the plurality of the public vote in the last election. That win was more driven by the Democrats really, really dropping the ball to the point where independents, and some democrats, couldn't stomach putting the Harris button.

But, never say never.

MAGA has too many RINOs?
What a stupid comment. You can’t be a RINO and be of MAGA sympathy.
All RINOs are undocumented democrats.

I think that the third party as spoiler claim is a myth. Most people who vote Libertarian or other fringe parties are politically disgruntled individuals who just wouldn't vote if the only choices were R vs D. It's like protest vote. On the left side of the aisle, the same is true of the Greens.

So Musk's proposed new party would just be a protest vote twice removed.

Head fake?

The “One Big Beautiful Bill” Act, recently passed by the House of Representatives, includes funding for Mars mission development and related initiatives as part of a larger allocation for NASA programs.

Specific Funding for Mars Exploration:

Mars Mission Development: The bill provides $9.9 billion for NASA to support various programs, including advancing Mars mission development.

Mars Telecommunications Orbiter (MTO): The bill allocates $700 million specifically for the development and procurement of an MTO to be delivered by December 31, 2028.

Mars Sample Return Mission: The bill includes funding for a telecommunications orbiter that can be used for a Mars Sample Return mission.

There's a big difference. The ideological difference between Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush is much narrower than that between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, so a spoiler now would do much more damage.

That being said, I'm not convinced Perot cost GWH Bush the election. Exit polls showed about an even split between former Democrats and former Republicans among Perot voters. Perot was just an excuse used for a poor reelection campaign by Bush.
