They Savaged Their Party’s Bill. Then They Voted for It.

Many Republicans had harshly criticized President Trump’s marquee bill extending tax cuts and slashing social safety net programs — almost right up until the moment they voted for it.

In the days leading up to House passage of Republicans’ sweeping policy bill carrying President Trump’s agenda, members of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus were unsparing in their criticism of the measure.

“That’s not fiscal responsibility. It’s not what we agreed to,” lawmakers in the caucus said in a statement after the Senate passed its version earlier this week with several major changes. “Republicans,” they added, “must do better.”

Representative Chip Roy, Republican of Texas and one of the most vocal fiscal hawks in Congress, fired off a series of posts outlining what he said were the seemingly endless list of problems with the bill.

“Increases deficits and violates the terms of the budget deal,” he wrote.

Representative Keith Self of Texas called it “morally and fiscally bankrupt.”

In the end, all of them voted for the bill, after an hourslong revolt that stretched from Wednesday night into early Thursday morning and ground the House floor to a halt. The legislation was unchanged, and while those who switched their positions to embrace it alluded to deals they had cut with Mr. Trump to address their concerns, it was not clear what, if any, commitments had been made or whether any would be fulfilled.

Representative Andy Harris of Maryland, the chairman of the Freedom Caucus, said that he and other conservative holdouts were swayed after discussions with Mr. Trump about “executive actions” and other steps he and his administration could take to change the way the law would be implemented.

“We came to significant agreements with the administration that changed the entire package, both inside and outside the bill, significantly.” Mr. Harris said...

The NYT savaged the bill and ran headlines for weeks before the vote, insinuating it would not be passed, that it faced insurmountable challenges, and was a real struggle. Now that it has passed, will the NYT shift gears and express surprise that it passed, or congratulate the President and the Speaker on getting this done? ... Don’t hold your breath.

The reason they voted for it is because they showed their deep state side and stripped it bare or siphoned off many things that MAGA and Trump wanted. Thus, making it something they thought they could lie to their constituents about, and still live with themselves.

The bill obviously is not the best.
But, it is the best of all possible bills.
The alternative of not passing it would be terrible!
I remember when McCain killed the Obamacare replacement bill.
He claimed, that “we can do better” and surely, the bill was not the best.
But, we never got better bill, and we got stuck with Obamacare!

Like they say, “Do not let the Perfect be the enemy of the Good”.

Yes.
This vote will forever stain his memory.
It makes me sick, every time I think about it!

The is a time to argue about any bill, Obamacare, or BBB included. But, at the end, you should vote with the party which elected you. Unless you are Mctraitor!

“Republicans,” they added, “must do better.”

Yeah, well then "do better" and get crackin'...because you have about 45 days to draft and pass hundreds of rescission bills to claw back all that pork you've been wasting your breath bitching about.

Hopefully the House members have them all drafted and ready to fire off in the next legislative day.

Those can be passed with a simple majority, which should be easy, because some of you seem to be somewhat simple.

Unless you screw it up, or can't stick together (a big "if") the RATs will have no say in it.

Thank you senate parliamentarian.

It’s awesome that one non partisan democrat who was put into this position in 2012 could single handedly do whatever the hell she wanted to do and the republicans would t do a damn thing to stop her.

Some actually got conservative concessions that will be dealt with outside the bill.

Meanwhile, long past time to shut the H1B program down: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/yourmoney/article-14874151/microsoft-mass-layoffs-h1b-visas.html
