Americans increasingly disapprove of Trump’s immigration policies, but the issue energizes his core supporters.
OCHOPEE, Florida — As President Donald Trump visited a new immigration detention center in the Everglades, the White House celebrated the local alligators as a new kind of security force.
“There is only one road leading in and … the only way out is a one-way flight,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday, previewing the facility for reporters and describing the local reptiles as a feature to discourage detainees from attempting escapes.
When asked Tuesday whether the intent was for the alligators to eat escaping detainees, Trump said he guessed “that’s the concept.”
“This is not a nice business,” Trump said as he left the White House wearing a red cap that said “Gulf of America.”
Detainees should be taught not to run away from the reptiles in a straight line, he said, making a zigzagging motion with his hand. (Experts have debunked this advice and do recommend running away from alligators in a straight line).
“And you know what? Your chances go up about 1 percent,” he said. “That’s not a good thing.”
On arrival at the facility, which administration allies have dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” Trump mused about a suggestion he had made in his first term about putting crocodiles in the Rio Grande to deter illegal crossings.
“Crocodiles from Africa. They are a step beyond,” he said. “That was really meant as a joke, but a lot of people liked it. And a lot of people think we should do it, frankly.”
The visit and the administration’s rhetoric around it appear designed to highlight Trump’s hard-line approach to immigration and his goal of mass deportations.
Americans display growing disapproval of those policies, according to numerous polls. But the issue energizes Trump’s base.

Exactly.
We do???? That's news to me. Fake News.
They need a few “mascots” roaming the premises...and this song on blast:
From one to two percent?
Yeah, it doesn't matter which way you run when you can't run in water up to your waist.
So just stand and enjoy being eaten alive.
fixed it.
Sounds about right. A 10,000 percent increase!
So just stand and enjoy being eaten alive.
GATORTRAZ.
What an enormous pile of crap...
His immigration policies got him elected, and he is the first politician in two hundred years to fully act on his pre-election promises...
The people who voted for him could not be happier with his performance...
Did WaPo REALLY consult "experts" on that? Did the "experts" really "debunk" it? Or is the WaPo trying to beat the Bee at its own game?
Sheesh, how stupid of them to "debunk" something like that. Are they just dumb children?
They are retards, to use one of the words they hate the most.
Right. I learned that from Crocodile Dundee- the first one.
It took three WaPosters [Cat Zakrzewski , Lori Rozsa and Matt Viser], living in the darkness there, to generate this drivel?
ChatGPT is likely to have done better.
"“Don’t run in a straight line. Run like this,” he said, as he moved his hand in a zigzag motion. “And you know what? Your chances go up about 1%."So they actually DID consult an "expert" website run by U of F on zigzag versus straight! The state of journalism today! That doesn’t seem to be sound advice, though. It’s best to dash in one direction in the rare situation when an alligator gives chase, according to a website run by the University of Florida."
