Andrew Cuomo is staying on the New York City mayoral election ballot — a move that prompted critics to slam the ex-gov as a “spoiler” candidate.
Sources confirmed that Cuomo will not decline to run on an independent ballot line, ahead of a Friday deadline to pull his name from the November ticket.
Cuomo’s defiant stance comes as he hemorrhages union support after his stunning loss to socialist contender Zohran Mamdani in Tuesday’s Democratic primary – and amid widespread consternation that he’ll give the Queens assemblyman an easier path to Gracie Mansion.
“Cuomo’s name in the race is fantastic for Mamdani,” said Sal Albanese, a former Brooklyn city councilman. “A thousand percent Cuomo is playing the spoiler. It makes Mamdani’s task of getting elected mayor much easier.”
The former governor conceded Mamdani’s win, but played coy on whether he would continue to run on his “Fight and Deliver” ballot line in the general election, saying he wanted to see the full results of the ranked-choice contest first.
A campaign source Friday confirmed that Cuomo – who faced a deadline of 5 p.m. to effectively withdraw from November’s ballot and growing calls to drop out – will not decline his independent line.
It remains unclear whether Cuomo will actually mount an active general election campaign. Sources close to Cuomo’s camp previously said the former governor almost certainly would not.
Even if he doesn’t actively campaign, staying on the general election ballot could siphon votes from Mayor Eric Adams, who will also be running on an independent line.
“If Cuomo stays in the race he splits the anti-Mamdani vote and helps Mamdani,” said state Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar, a Dyker Heights resident...
Lawyer Jim Walden is also running as an independent candidate in the general election.

Sliwa is gonna lose half his voters to Adams as many people feel Adams has the best chance to keep Mamdani out and is the lesser of two evils.
Wouldn't be surprised if Adams gets a soft endorsement from President Trump.
Doesn't really matter. Mamdani is gonna win.
Cuomo sent thousands of elderly people to their deaths, why would he worry about sending millions to a communist gulag?
We need immediate legislation that will deny bailouts for bad decisions.
No more Wall Street bailouts
No more. bank bailouts
No bailouts for voters wHo make bad decisions. These disasters are foretold.
I still think the first choice should be Snake Plissken.
It's not much of a choice but I'd rather have Adams as Mayor because at the least he finally criticized Biden's immigration policy.
A true Hobson’s Choice, where neither selection is a good one.
At least Adams is cooperating with ICE.
Nope. But I have friends who do, who are MAGA, and who are holding their noses and voting for Eric Adams.
Sliwa gets 14%.
Trump needs to give him a job in his administration.
He should be an ambassador to a random country.

Just a guess, but Cuomo was likely pressured by panicked NY Democratic Party regulars to stay on the independent ticket past the deadline — not to win, but to see if he could hurt Mamdani’s chances.
With little chance of victory, Cuomo’s role is that of spoiler. And let’s be clear: it’s Mamdani who threatens the party’s future, not Adams.
Adams, even as an independent, isn’t a serious threat to Democratic dominance in New York. He’s a known quantity with deep ties to the party, labor, and city institutions. Many Democrats still view him as aligned with their goals.
Mamdani, on the other hand, is a loose cannon at best—and a hardcore socialist Islamist at worst—which is why the establishment is far more concerned about him.
“Mamdani, on the other hand, is a loose cannon at best”
He’s so “Obama” (mm mm mm). The only talent is as a stirrer-upper. Never had a job. Smooth talker no matter what accent is being used. Total flim-flam man.
And his mama advises him on his slick video adverts.
Mamdani’s mother is Mira Nair, a world-class filmmaker. Even if she’s not directly producing his campaign videos, her influence is all over them. The pacing, the tone, the polish — that doesn’t happen by accident. You don’t grow up in a house like that and not absorb the craft. His media strategy may be run by Fight Agency, but the storytelling fingerprints feel very much like a filmmaker’s touch.
I doubt Cuomo needed to be "pressured" to stay on the ballot. It suits his ego.
Plus, he might even be entertaining delusions that he'll win.
“And his mama advises him on his slick video adverts.”
In an interview he said that it doesn’t hurt that his mother is some kind of movie maker.
And he grew up well-to-do, but hates capitalism.
Possible, but unlikely.
All are Deep State.
They are all doing what Deep State tells them to do.
