It’s getting late early for John Cornyn.
Yet another poll shows the four-term incumbent lagging well behind his hard-right challenger, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, in next year’s primary.
The poll, conducted on behalf of a Paxton-allied super PAC, shows the Texas attorney general with a commanding 19-point lead over the incumbent — 57 to 38 percent — in a head-to-head matchup of Texas Republican primary voters.
It’s the latest data point for national Republicans who see Cornyn flailing with primary voters but worry about the general election prospects for Paxton, who has faced both indictment and impeachment.
The race has increasingly become a topic of worry in Republican circles as operatives dread the prospect of an ugly, expensive primary that could potentially provide an opening for Democrats in the Lone Star State.
Perhaps most remarkable, the poll shows Paxton with higher name ID than Cornyn, who has long been a national figure on Capitol Hill. Eighty-nine percent of primary voters have an opinion of Paxton and 84 percent of Cornyn. Both are viewed positively by the electorate, but Paxton is far more well-liked. His net favorable-unfavorable ratio is 70 to 18 percent, while Cornyn’s is 53 to 30 percent.
The poll continues a trend of Paxton being beloved by voters who identify as Trump Republicans. He has a 44-point lead with that demographic, while Paxton lags Cornyn by 15 points among those who identify as Reagan Republicans.
The entrance of Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) into the race — he is considering a run — would make little difference, according to the poll. The two-term congressmember from Houston draws equally from both candidates and would finish a distant third.
The poll was conducted by Pulse Research from June 17-22 among 806 Republican primary voters...

So, if Paxton gets the nomination, is this seat going to a Dem?
How come there isn’t a conservative in the whole state of Texas who can run?
Aren’t either of them going to have trouble?
Wow... good one. You apparently don’t live in Texas. Paxton will win in a landslide. People have been holding their nose and voting for that RINO POS Cornyn for years due to the lame ass argument that he was better than a Demonic libtard. No difference...
I hope you are right. Not sure if the demographics are changing in Texas. I want that state staying bright red!
How is Paxton far right?
I mean I know this is politico but…
He’s a lawyer without corruption. What’s the problem
As a former Texan (and still landowner there) I like your take, may it work out for all.
To radical Left-wing extremists anything to the right of them is “far right.”
The “Reagan Republicans” must be older voters who stick with familiar names in balloting.
Bye-bye Cornholio.
He’s a douche. Such a douche he thinks he’s great and people who don’t like him are bad.
That’s what makes them silly. Completely ignorable
Ted Cruz is going to have to work for a living or get totally shown up. Watching that.
I am a Reagan Republican and despise Cornyn. I vote for patriots and when one isn’t running, I hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two evils (like both Bushes). My take is if you don’t vote you can’t complain, so I vote every time even if the right fields a loser.
Paxton made an idiot of himself with the Reefer Madness press conference. I’d prefer him over Cornyn BY FAR, but he needs to wise up.
Hopefully this will go the same way Marsha Blackburn replaced Bob Corker, another disgusting fella. Corker took himself out.
Because the Bush machine and free traitors are firmly in control of Texas. They have flooded Texas with Californians, New Yorkers and their wives. Pickens, Perry and Abbott feasted on windmill and solar subsidies and shut down coal, Chinese money, big tech, you name it.
They were very authoritarian during covid.
As they tout the money they are making for the state... they couldn’t give a tinkers damn about killing the culture.
Flip through any issue of Texas Monthly Magazine. It’s pretty much New York and California high life culture with a slight Texas accent. THAT is who Texas republicans are. Texas Highways is the magazine that showcases a lot of the Texas they are busy killing.
That would be awesome...
Paxton is very conservative.
