Abbott Vetoes Ban on Hemp Intoxicants in Texas
The New York Times ^ | June 23, 2025, 8:36 a.m. ET | J. David Goodman

Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas vetoed a bill late Sunday that would have created one of the nation’s strictest bans on the sale of intoxicants made from hemp, maintaining the state’s fast-growing market for the products at least for now.

The ban bill was pushed through the Legislature last month by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a hard-line conservative, and was fiercely resisted by consumers and by the growing number of businesses across Texas that sell gummies, joints, drinks and other products derived from hemp.

The law would have made it a crime in Texas to possess or sell consumable hemp products with a detectable amount of THC, the psychoactive chemical produced naturally by the cannabis plant. Texas does not allow the recreational use of marijuana, as hemp with a high THC content is known, though the state has a limited medical marijuana program.

Mr. Abbott waited until the final minutes before the ban would have automatically become law to issue his veto.

In a statement issued along with the veto, he said the hemp ban would have been challenged immediately in the courts. He directed lawmakers to return to the State Capitol next month to take up the issue of regulating the industry instead of banning it.

“Texas must strongly regulate hemp, and it must do so immediately,” Mr. Abbott said in his statement.

The veto put the governor at odds with Mr. Patrick, who wields considerable power in the state. Mr. Patrick said in a statement that the “late-night veto” by Mr. Abbott left Republicans in the legislature — who strongly backed the ban — and law enforcement officials who supported it “feeling abandoned” by the governor.

The back-and-forth...

You are 100% right.

No one cares for far right religious social.types trying to run their lives with a religion they don’t believe in. Both extremes are trying to run people’s and it’s a huge turn off for the majority in the middle. The current admin is smart enough to know leave it up to the states for moral issues like abortion or weed. Every state that has referendum to put either in a direct ballot has legalized BITH because this is what the majority want. Don’t care what the fringe gets butt hurt about the majority has spoken every time it has been allowed to be voted on. Accept it.

Hemp and marijuana are separated in part by the amount of THC found in them. They are the same species, just different varieties or subspecies. Those who think that there isn't some overlap between the two are deluded.

People are fiscal conservatives also out of self preservation, of the right goes all crazy social conservatives like the past they get crushed as we youngers walk. You need us we out number you geezers 3 to 1 never forget that. End of discussion we don’t need you you absolutely need us never forget that.

Social conservatives are less than 10% of registered voters if that. They need the fiscal conservatives to even be relevant. If they anger the younger fiscal conservatives they get absolutely crushed at the polls. Most younger people are socially liberal it’s only the ones who are financially successful who say wait I need someone who will help my wallet it’s self preservation.

We don't need you as much as you think. Yes, we may only be here for a little while, but we have a better country awaiting, that is, a heavenly one (Hebrews 11:6). We're not going to change our opinions to please your unwanted obsessions. If you want our vote (and you will), you need to realize that.

Reposting an earlier post of mine:

I've been listening to local talk show host Michael Berry talking about this for weeks, if not months.

Here's the story behind the story.

  1. This bill was sponsored by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick. It was originally publicized as keeping the THC products away from children, but during a heated press conference asking why it included adults, too, Patrick blurted out that "We want to keep it from adults, too! Why would you want to take this! It will kill you!"

  2. Gov. Greg Abbott waited until the last day to veto the bill because Texas doesn't have a "pocket veto" like the federal Congress does. The Texas state legislature passed this bill and sent it to Abbott and then immediately recessed sine die. If Abbott didn't sign it, it would still become law. He vetoed it and said he would call for a special session of the legislature in September to take this up again as a regulation that keeps THC products from people under 18 years of age, rather than it being an outright ban.

Abbott also said that the law as is would not have survived the many lawsuits that would have followed its adoption into law.

  3. Berry said that this bill was one of those "not what it purports to be" bills. This bill was being heavily pushed by the beer and alcohol lobby in Texas because the THC industry was eating into their sales.

Furthermore, Patrick's chief political advisor Allen Blakemore is also a lobbyist in Austin representing the beer and alcohol industry. The beer and alcohol, through Blakemore, was pushing the THC ban through Patrick as President of the Texas Senate. This is why Patrick was so insistent in getting this bill passed.

This bill wasn't necessarily about keeping THC away from children, it was about protecting the liquor industry in Texas. Abbott vetoed the bill and is calling for a special session of the legislature to pass a tighter regulation keeping THC products away from children.

Look at my past posts , I don’t smoke at all never have.

I also don’t want government dictating morals at all. Freedom is just That freedom. Alcohol kills more people than weed that’s scientific fact. It also causes more deaths by intoxicated people killing someone else too.

Again boomers are insufferable, you need our votes or you get crushed by the three generations younger than you who can vote.

The Patrick backed bill treats all THC the same. That is like treating fresh orange juice, often 1/2% alcohol, the same as Everclear grain alcohol, which is 95% alcohol.

Social conservatives are less than 10% of registered voters if that.

You are clueless. Social conservatives are one of the largest voting blocs within the Republican Party. Recent polls say that 38% of Americans identify as social conservatives as opposed to 29% who identify as social liberals. And the gap is widening, not closing.

My point is that cannabis products with supposedly legal amounts of THC is being sold in states where high levels of THC are illegal. However, there is no way that you can absolutely draw the line between low THC cannabis and high THC cannabis.

If every boomer voted in one block , the three generations younger could still swamp y’all we absolutely don’t need you at all. Every day more of you die and every day more younger are turning 18 and can vote. Demographics is destiny. You need us we don’t need y’all at all. The cold hard mathematics is on our side.

Fiscal conservatives are the youngers who have accumulated wealth it’s that simple. We would.vote socially liberal if they were not Marxists trying to take our hard earned wealth. The social issues turn us right off. It’s purely monetary and nationalism for a lot of youngers. We don’t want unlimited immigration or progressive putative taxes. We do care about gays, weed, abortion or DEI

“ However, there is no way that you can absolutely draw the line between low THC cannabis and high THC cannabis.”

Yes there is and it’s done every day. There are labs specifically for this purpose and products are labeled.
