According to an analysis released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the bill would add $2.4 trillion to deficits over the next decade while forcing millions to lose health insurance coverage.
In an interview with All Things Considered host Scott Detrow, the Wisconsin senator said Trump's bill — which narrowly passed the House — will not pass the Senate in its current form because it will "skyrocket" the deficit.
"I can't accept this is the new normal," Johnson told NPR. "It's just unacceptable."
Now that Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" is in the hands of the Senate, some fiscal hawks — including Republicans like Johnson — are pushing back.
The senator said he wants to return spending to pre-pandemic levels and break up the House bill into separate Senate bills.
The bill would cut taxes, change federal food benefits and put work requirements on Medicaid, among many other things.

At this point, I don’t think Trump gives a damn about the BBB.
He’s too busy having a pissing contest with Musk.
Just. Damn.
Simply have a roll call vote. It would take half an hour.
Again: Yeah, it’s not looking good for thd two of then.
Trump has done alot of good, but he’s not shown himself, even pre-Covid, to be fiscally conservative. He outspent Obama’s 2012-2016 spending levels pre-Covid from 2017 to 2019
Then people are pointing out Trump’s past comments on how deficits are very bad:

So... Elon attacks congress, not Trump, and Trump, instead of defending Congress attacks Elon.
That’s the ]part that doesn’t sit right...
Typical POG..perfect over good.
Johnson should not be a shill for NPR, telling them what they want to hear.
Then there’s this... one more time:
Others support overspending, but Trump is president, not them, and he has a bully pulpit to tell Mike Johnson to reign in the spending.
Secondly, more spending without cuts leads to more inflation. All they are doing is cutting the rate of the increase.
Keep the tax cuts.
Let the peeps fool around with mufflers.
Ditch the rest.
Welp, it’s been a good run. I had hoped for more from GOP Congress with Trump in office and with a mandate. Prepare for ‘26 to be a political bloodbath for the rotten, ignorant, statist pieces o’ excrement. My vote for Trump in ‘24 was my last vote for a Republican. Let it all go to hell at this point. That’s really the only chance we got to right the ship.
It’s gonna get tweaked, but will ultimately be passed.
I hope Ron Johnson is wrong.
The tax cuts alone make this bill worthwhile. Individuals, families, businesses, and the economy benefits. Even the gov’t when they figure out a booming economy means more gov’t revenue
However, gov’t balanced budget is the least of our concerns. Gov’t needs to be cut by more than 80% to become constitutional. Then there would be no worry about “deficits” and no pressure for taxes at that point.
“Wisconsin senator said Trump’s bill — which narrowly passed the House — will not pass the Senate in its current form because it will “skyrocket” the deficit.

Understand but the objections are probably not because there are not enough spending cuts. After all the Senate is a major factor why we are in the mess we are in right now. So I am not buying that argument.
The Senate would probably not pass a bill with significant spending cuts either. Thus I don’t see many options here except to pass permanent tax cuts first and then tackle spending cuts next in a separate bill. Do it in stages.
Ron Jon is wrapped about as tight as Elon Musk: https://wisdems.org/wisdems-news/ron-johnson-says-watching-building-7-collapse-as-result-of-9-11-terrorist-attack-is-cool/
Another possibility is to have the Medicaid work requirements kick on the following January 1 if the debt:
1. exceeds $38 trillion by the end of the 2025 fiscal year
2. exceeds $39.5 trillion by the end of the 2026 fiscal year
3. exceeds $40.8 trillion by the end of the 2027 fiscal year
4. exceeds $42 trillion by the end of the 2028 fiscal year
5. exceeds $43.1 trillion by the end of the 2029 fiscal year
6. exceeds $44 trillion by the end of the 2030 fiscal year
7. exceeds $45 trillion by the end of the 2031 fiscal year.
All I keep hearing from this ass Johnson is that the bill will not pass and nothing about what he is doing to get changes through so it will.
Seems like Ron Johnson like to be courted by media. He’s been appearing continuously.
Other possibilities are to shrink the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Credit by the amount of the national debt increase.
*rein. Autocorrect never works except when I don’t want it to. LOL.
Won't happen without the pork in the bill.
