A 7-year-old boy was fatally struck by an SUV last week as he tried to cross a road in North Carolina – and now his parents have been arrested and charged for leaving him unsupervised, according to police.
Legend Jenkins was hit by a Jeep Cherokee on May 27 at around 6 p.m. while walking with his 10-year-old brother outside a crosswalk in Gastonia, a city west of Charlotte. Their mother told a local news outlet that it was the first time she had allowed them to walk to a nearby grocery store alone.
Jenkins was rushed to a nearby medical facility with life-threatening injuries and was later transferred to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 10 p.m.
The boy’s mother, Jessica Ivey, and his father, Sameule Jenkins, were arrested and charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, felony child neglect and misdemeanor child neglect, the Gastonia Police Department announced two days later.

That's beyond cruel and stupid.
Raising a family in Gastonia is beyond cruel and stupid.
Legend Jenkins.
It would seem the driver should be the one arrested.
Gastonia isn’t an huge city and it should be safe for a 10 year old and 7 year old to walk to the nearby store. This is very sad, but the parents shouldn’t be charged.
10 and 7 can’t walk outside alone?
“”while walking with his 10-year-old brother “””
When I was 10 I was gone all day, just like most kids at the time. It doesn’t look like child neglect to me.
They look like that, huh? Then based on looks alone, you find them guilty of felony involuntary manslaughter?
If anyone should even possibly be considered to be charged it would be the driver. Chsrging parents for normal stuff that can happen, thats not neglect. The law thinks parents must be helicopter parents 24/7/365. That doesnt let kids be kids. Not with a parent hovering over you constantly waiting to disrupt natural interactions and kid stuff.
They want parents to be wardens and guards always watching the inmates.
In the early 1960's I walked to kindergarten at 5 years old with my 7 year old sister and occasionally other kids. It was considered normal at the time.
Hopefully they screened the perps for drugs before their arraignment.
God, you’re a heartless bastard.
Was the driver of the SUV charged? You are right, charging the parents is beyond cruel and stupid. Must be a politically hungry D.A. behind that decision.
You are too kind.
Maybe if the 7 year old was alone (not sure) but with the 10 year old along that’s why I can’t see it.
Boy my parents would be in a heap of trouble for we were always wandering off to the ocean/lake/woods. With that said, helicopter parents cause more harm to the child’s development than letting them make their own decision and mistakes. Otherwise they never really mature fully.
The driver was probably politically connected.
Hint: 1.5 million dollar bail is a HUGE hint. That is not a normal amount for a mere traffic accident.
There must be more to this story my gut tells me the parents are drug addicted they were probably high when the police arrived!!
